Well it's been a pretty good 1st round for the WICB. Players from the academy have had a real impact:

Kieron Powell - Maiden FC century against a good England Lions side. He has scored countelss half centuries without converting before his visit to the academy so this is definite progress.

Shannon Gabriel - 3/61 in 20 hostile overs against Barbados on an extremely flat deck.

Nkrumah Bonner - 7 wickets with his leg spinners and named man of the match against Windward Islands.

Brandon Bess - 5/28 against a strong Jamaica side. Those were career best figures.

Shamarh Brooks - 60 not out and led a lower order fightback for Barbados.

Kraigg Braithwaite, who has just turned 18, notched up his 2nd FC hundred today against T & T, meaning he now averages 45 in FC cricket.

Somethings are just inevitable and Braithwaite becoming a World Class batsman is one of them. When he is ready in a year or so, we can move Gayle down to 5/6 and have an extremely potent batting lineup.

There is genuine light at the end of the tunnel and it's been a long time coming.

While Gayle at six does sound awesome to my mind, I can't help but feel Brathwaite or Barath batting three is more likely, unfortunately.

Yeah you're probably right.

I just just hope the promise of Gayle coming in against tired bowlers is too much to ignore for the team management when you have such capable young top order batsman.

The only thing I would say is the thought of Braithwaite, Nash and Chanderpaul batting in the same lineup nearly sends me to sleep. I might have to become a bit of a cricinfo warrior when those 3 are batting.

It will be good for our run production and time in the middle but my word will it be painful on the eyes.

250* from Marlon Samuels today.
What an innings!

thanks for reviving this thread, Beamer. Sadly, the discussion has been limited by the banning of Windie and aussie, who were wums, that's true, but they did add some colour to discussions about WI cricket.

An excellent opening victory for the Lions, with five of the top six getting some early runs under their belt. Then everyone chipping in with the ball, it looks like a very good team performance, with Dernbach probably just stealing the bowling headlines with his 5-16 in the second innings.

Looks a pretty well balanced team, with four specialist bowlers, different style of bowlers in Dernbach, Harris, Buck, and the spinner Briggs. Then the options of Stokes and Bopara for some medium paced stuff. Kieswetter batting at six allows Stokes to come in and express himself at seven.

This should be a great experience for this group of players, and it's on to Barbados on Friday for their next challenge.

Unforgivable. Crap attack, presumably Plunkett will fly back with Rashid, who should be there also.
Yeah Plunkett, Rashid and Finn, Woakes is meant to be there at some point as well.

Rashid
Woakes
Plunkett
Briggs
Finn

Might be a worthwile attack in the WI

Gale or Bairstow will replace Bopara you'd have thought. The batting is strong. Possible they might send Davies out there as well to replace Bopara.

Dernabach has always struck me as pretty ordinary. I am prepared to get excited about Nathan Buck, however.

The Leewards are arguably the weakest of the Caribbean teams, especially since they inexplicably omitted Chesney Hughes from their XI....

The Lions should - hopefully - get a better contest against Barbados.

Good to see that both Nash and Darren Ganga are fit for the nexst round.

Is he not back with Derbyshire now?

He was available for the first two matches of the competition and yet was still left out.
