How long do we have to wait on Pollard's potential to translate into runs at this level?

Yeah, but are Rampaul or Russell really better one day bowlers? Rampaul certainly looked like far more of a passenger today and based on the evidence of his Test debut and overall lack of experience in general, I'd definitely pick Sammy ahead of Russell for the World Cup as well (and I'm a Russell fan).Sammy's looking more and more like a passenger....
Sammy's obviously pretty ordinary but I'm yet to be convinced West Indies have better options in the squad even if you ignore captaincy. Tests are obviously a different matter but I'd pick him in the one day team anyway.

I accept the point that spinners shouldn't make their debut agianst SC teams, but it does seem pointless playing two-leftarmers in the same team. Now would be a good time to have given Bishoo a debut - in a fairly irrelevant ODI series, with the World Cup around the corner....
A missed opportunity, IMHO.

That is true....I wouldn't be happy to see Russell and Rampaul in the starting XI right now. We are playing this match without Roach, of course.

Yeah, but playing both Miller and Benn isn't really needed when you have Gayle, and of course you had Rampaul playing for Roach in this game anyway. The way I see it...

Which of Devon Smith, Rampaul, Russell or Miller would add more to that lineup than Sammy? I'd only really consider Miller, and I don't think today is a good example of Sammy keeping him out of the team costing much...

I would give him the whole of the World Cup tbh. It is worth the risk as Pollard coming off = West Indies win.

Sammy being captain is going to cause our selectors all sorts of headaches. The team you have listed above is short of another fastbowler, there is no getting around it. That is why I would play Andre Russell ahead of Sammy if he wasn't captain. Russell also offers freakishly big hitting at the end of the innings. Unfortunately the only way of getting another fastbowler in the team is by dropping Pollard which I really don't want to do. It's time we gave him a complete run of matches and made a decision on him.
However, as we can't do that because of the ridiculous situation the WICB have got us into
we are going to have to go into every match with a plethora of medium pacers, one genuine pacer and an inconsistent left arm spinner. Oh joy!
On the other hand I really like the way our batting line-up is coming together just before the World Cup. Barath and Bravo are a joy to watch, Sarwan is back and if Gayle gets a start we will definitely rack up excellent partnerships during the middle overs. Hopefully that will allow the big hitters we have down the order to actually contribute something to the team for once.

I would pick Sammy ahead of Russell on bowling alone at this point though - in one day cricket anyway. I'm quite a Russell fan but not in one day cricket - not yet anyway, not in a World Cup.

Ideally he would be concentrating on 4 day cricket I agree, but he is the only penetrative back up fast bowler we have and so for the sake of team balance he really should be playing.
They should definitely have picked someone like Nelon Pascal or even Tino Best as a back up pacer.

Judging by the side PEWS has listed, I'd agree in that it is one penetrative quick bowler short. Someone to take the new ball with Roach in search of wickets, and also to offer a genuine threat in the middle overs.
Think Pollard, Bravo and Gayle may be effective enough, and Sammy would be the obvious candidate to miss out, but as had been said, that is highly unlikely now.

I completely agree, but in the absence of Taylor and Edwards (or hell even Powell who, dire as he is, has a decent ODI record as a strike bowler), I'd pick Sammy over Rampaul or Russell (at this stage). No doubt it's a weak point of the side.

Yes it's one thing identifying a potential weak area in a team, but it can be incredibly difficult in suggesting a solution if there simply aren't the players available. I don't personally know enough about the capabilities of some of the fringe WI quicks in the one-day format to suggest who should be playing ahead of someone like Sammy. Like you I would have certain reservations in picking Rampaul ahead of Sammy.
