*Official* India in South Africa

South Africa will think there are way too many overs left in the game. Not only is the run-rate now irrelevant, sooner or later they are going to have to bring back Parnell.

Faf Du Plessis on.

Big gamble here.
It's an interesting move. I don't think India should try anything silly because a wicket here means almost certain defeat. Smith trying to induce a brain cramp here IMO.

The question about Pathan is whether he can do it against quality teams. Before that century against NZ he averaged 23. His average against SL is 21 in 7 innings. SL is the kind of team we could meet in the semi or final and I don't think Pathan is likely to fire more than one in every five or six games against them or against any other quality team. I don't think that's enough.

I think he might have turned a corner with that scintillating 100 against NZ. And I don't believe there is such a huge gap between so called top 4 teams and the rest in ODIs. Surely he is doing a neat job here also. I think his 100 against NZ could be potentially like Symonds' 100 in the WC 03.

NZ was thrashed by BD before they played India; I honestly wouldn't put too much stock on that hundred spectacular though it was. Still if he takes India home in this game that will be a point in his favour.

Don't think Pathan's effect can be gauged from Averages.

He doesn't really worry about his wicket with the way he plays.

His job is to do a Quick Smash and Dash rather than play a innings. Though he may not do it every game ,when he succeeds he makes life a lot easier for others.
For example Raina here.

And he in anycase averages near 30 in ODI's and that coupled with his strike rate is enough for a number 7 in the current Indian team.

Also playing Srilanka in Srilanka and in India are a different kettle of fish altogether.
And even in Srilanka his average is more to do with coming in the slog overs and losing his wicket slogging.

Teams will be looking to bowl the spinners before the batting power-play's taken. Pathan's useful as a spoiler in that sort of a scenario.

What a Brainfart from Raina.

Has Been watching too much footage of Saffer batting in the last game ,it seems.

That average is heavily inflated by that one NZ innings. He is probably a low 20's batsmen against good teams. Anyway a big test for him here now that Raina is gone.
