On a more controversial note, I hope for SA's sake that Steyn can kick out of passenger mode and contribute consistently to earn his place.

Not watched that much SA ODIs tbf but it is very very curious that Steyn is so, well, poor in the middle format.

Especially since he's excellent at OD cricket domestically. So it's not just that he's poor at the format.

Well poor by his standards.
I think he struggles to bowl accurate yorkers, so it really costs him.

Average of 30 is OK, but an ER of 5.4 is not. No 5WIs are a concern for your strike bowler too, especially an expensive one. By his standards it's dreadful.
On second inspection, maybe 30 isn't so OK:

Average of 27, ER of 5, 2 5WIs.
Bearing in mind this is a guy that I and many people wouldn't pick in my team, the comparative merits don't stack up very well for Steyn.

We don't really need another one when Gambhir and Sehwag come back.
But even if we do ,Mukund should be ahead of Vijay. Infact i would even give Rahane a run as opener ahead of him.
And we did try out Shikhar Dhawan in the last series who is a decent shout.

Yes we do. Tendulkar rarely plays ODI's. At least one of Sehwag or Gambhir are injured each series (when was the last time they opened again?). There has to be some specialist who's pushing for selection surely? Much rather have a domestic player than Vijay or makeshift guys like Denish Karthik.
