I think his partner give him a swift kick in the groin every time he plays that shot. He never scores with it, yet he keeps playing it and almost nicking it. The worst sort of shot: no upside and a huge risk.

And he keeps doing it.

Meh, all batsmen had some luck. He keeps playing that ******** shot but he's still there and is doing a fine job for India.

Such a huge first session tonight. Can't wait!!!

Well, when you play a shot, usually it's with an intention to either not lose a wicket, or score some runs. Sometimes you risk your wicket to play a shot that will yield in runs. But he plays a shot to a ball that has no way to take his wicket, except if he risks a shot. Except that risk never actually yields runs, so he is basically risking his wicket because......??

  1. Play a shot to a ball head height two feet away from the stumps...and have it go to gully for no run every time
  2. ???
  3. Profit

When Gambhir first came on the scene he had two glaring weaknesses. One was that he used to plant his foot across the stumps and was hence a prime lbw candidate. The other was that he was very 'loose' square of the wicket and had the tendency to open the bat-face. He worked very hard at the former and seems to have overcome it - Although he still has the same tendency, his head doesn't fall over and he doesn't get out lbw as much nowadays. But strangely he still hasn't overcome the latter which should have been easier to correct. Maybe it's because it hasn't cost him much yet since he hasn't played much away from home on quick wickets.

How did Gambhir look ? The small part of his innings I saw he looked terribly out of form
Excellent.

On a side note, I love the fact that there are so many random Gambhir haters around here. Stick it to 'em, mate.

He never looks good in a match where the bowlers get above average bounce or movement. Did not play a lot of attacking shots and looked like he was going to get out any ball in some spells, but got lucky a few times and has survived so far. Not pretty but effective.

He was just lucky tbh and should have been out to Tsotsobe. His innings is a real bonus because normally you would not expect him to score runs under these conditions against a good pace attack.

He looked pretty good in that ODI series in Australia in what was his breakthrough series.

we need to take a minumum lead of 80+ to save the game... Because we will struggle in the last inng if we have to score any thing above 200...ya i know our record recently chasing totals around 250-300

Best thing for India is that SA have no spinner to take advantage of the turn. Botha could've been helpful here but Smith being the **** that he is, prefers harris (wac) over him. While harby could be really a handful in the 2nd innings.

Interesting day's play ahead
