Things I'd change though- always have a third man and don't give a batsman the single unless he's not going to take it. But always give the batsman the single if he isn't going to take it. The criticism of captains for setting the field back is so silly when the batsman isn't taking the single. Why would he have men in position to save runs the batsman won't even go for?
Save the boundaries.

That's what Strauss should want, though. Throwing 5 out because the tail are on the mow is just a bit defensive, especially when neither batter is going that well..

But by keeping the men back you are turning the boundaries into singles, which the better batsman doesn't take.

Far worse to give them time at the crease facing defensive fields to do exactly what Mitch is doing, for mine.

How many times have we seen a captain back off when the tailenders hit 2 fours and then the tailenders scoring big? Harbhajan all over again *shivers*

Yeah I agree, Strauss created this situation by throwing the field back the first time a boundary was hit by a tail-ender. No pressure on the batsman at all when he first comes in.

But Midge did take the singles on offer... I agree with you in these cases :p.

When the batsman isn't taking the single, a point simply has no advantage over a deep point. None.
