Probably between Mahmood and Harmison still. No real out and out young quick caught my eye lately.

Hmmm...it's going to be tough for him to fight his way back into the team with the bowling depth England has atm - or I guess you could say the English bowling stock has too many layers to accommodate Onions.

I don't think he's ready for International cricket yet. It'd be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

If he is fit he may get an early summer test if they choose to rest the likes of Anderson or Broad after the World Cup. Depends how far we go in that i suppose.

That is amazing.. I thought there would definitely have been some rookie who is quick. Finn was pretty sharp though..

Yes it's a shame England don't have a genuine quick coming through, it's one option we are lacking. Someone to penetrate by pure pace when the track isn't offering much. A player that can ruffle the feathers of even the most accomplished top order batsman, by banging the ball in and testing a players mettle.

There are a few young lads capabale of similar pace to Mahmood, but are a long way from international cricket.

Broad may not be an express quick but he can definitely perform that sort of role if needed, IMO.

Yes Broad can certainly provide lively spells, no doubt about it, but not what I'd call a genuine quick, most of his spells operate in the mid 80's, but he can find that extra gear. He is probably as close as we've got to somone producing that kind of spell, still not 100% sure of the actual type of bowler Broad is just yet.

Not sure about that, saw Shoaib Akhtar give us major problems on some very flat decks in Pakistan, mainly brought about because of his pace. As he was operating on express, his slower ball became more effective and his yorker eliminated the pitch entirely. Not saying I'd pick a quick ahead of Broad by any stretch, but it's just an option we haven't got at the moment.

I agree with your general point in that a bowler that can use variations can generally be more effective on dead tracks.

Watched van Troost play, so am not big on pace for pace's sake TBH. He was the quickest I've seen but he was rubbish.

Absolutely, just out and out pace is no good to anyone at Test level, unless you are ridiculously sharp.

Kirby does have a yard on him, if only he had a bit more aggression

How do you reckon he'll go on the Taunton tracks ? Him and Gemaal Hussain was a pretty useful combination for Gloucester on the helpful tracks at Bristol, just wonder if they have enough in their locker to be equally effective for Somerset in Division One. Hussain has essentially had just one exceptional season so will be interesting to see how he goes against some stronger opposition.
