Is Laxman a great batsman?

I haven't posted on this thread, but think I will now.

"Great" itself means different things to different people. Sometimes used too loosely, sometimes too stringently. If G Vishwanath and the Indian spin quartet (which was basically crap except in helpful conditions) are dubbed great, then sure as hell VVS Laxman is great!

Before 2010, I used to call him 'the second Azhar'.

Now, I am tempted to call him 'the second Ranjitsinhji'...

If Steve Waugh is considered a great for scoring in tough situations, then Laxman has a pretty strong case too.

Time and again has done it for India in real tough situations. May not be 100's but he is par to anybody currently in terms of knocks under pressure.

As I said earlier, without doubt one of the greats of his generation, but a rung below the all time greats.

Behind only Dravid when it comes to Indian batsmen from 2000-09.

He may not have the consitency of Sachin & Kallis, but certainly steps up in under pressure situations.I consider him as a great player.Dravid & Laxman are very good in crisis situations.

Anyone who can perform like that under pressure is a great player.. I dont care whether his average gets to 50 or not..many 50 plus average batsmen cant play the way he plays under pressure.

Great player to watch, but he's played in the same era as everyone else this lats decade- a run scoring decade and he hasnt come close to matching other players. Sure he;s played some amazing knocks and i love watching him, but if he;s that great he should be able to score runs to match the other great batsmen of the last decade, or even his era. His average has never got to 50, now people say Jayawardene is not that good, 50 or no 50 average, too may easy runs, well Laxman has been found wanting on so many occasions in the 1st innings, a handful of winning 4th innings knocks doesnt change that. If he;s played in the easiest batting decade then why hasnt he cashed in? Most of his career he's averaged 42-44. Good, but not great.
vvs made runs in pressure situations against the best attack and opposition of his time: The Mighty Aussies, home and away! Jaywardene hasnt done anything of the sort and cashed against lesser opposition and under less pressure situations!

Averaged less than 45 for his first 46 Tests; dropped back into the 44s 10 Tests later where it remained until his 98th Test. It has been above 45 from his 104th Test onwards (currently at 119 Tests).

I think that constitutes a majority of his career.

Yes Laxman's average has never reached 50..but averages are not everything. Viv Richards barely managed 50 yet would I pick Jayawardene, Kallis, Sangakkara, Ponting, Lara over Richards? Not in a thousand years.
Averages are important but so is how and when you get those runs.. Guys like Jayawardene, Sangakkara average well over 50 but often disappoint under pressure, when SL really needs them to deliver..which is why SL havent won test series on a consistent basis. Laxman on the other hand thrives under pressure

The last 10 years where he's averaged 51 constitute the majority of his career.

He averages 52.56 in the last 11 years (94 matches) i.e. excluding his first 16 matches.
