Whatever it takes!!!
I remember Laxman being criticised for giving Ishant the strike in the Famous win against Australia in the recent series.
And again, you keep missing the point. Ishant is a better bat than Unadkat for sure, but even beyond that, that game we were getting close to winning with every single run we got. NOT the case here.. And it is obvious the conditions and the bowling attacks were different too. Not really too difficult to see why one is not the same as the other.

Drawn series vs Pakistan in UAE ( You try and win a game with Marshall, Ambrose, McGrath, Akram and Warne on those AD roads dude. Even Misbah scored a hundred there :p )
Not at all. Weren't South Africa thirty-something for three in the second test ? Could have been worse had the umpires not been as magnanimous to AB - he got plenty of chances in that double hundred of his, the first being when he was on twenty-something. South Africa could have easily been fifty for five on those same 'roads'.

This whole Tendy kerfuffle is a bit like arguing that it was utterly disgraceful that the contractors had used Cherrywood instead of Beechwood for the doors......after the building's collapsed.
Hear hear!

If Sachin had managed to hog the strike and score some more runs, there will be some here who would have said he is obviously going for Mo Yousuf's highest runs in a calendar year selfishly when the team should have regrouped and focussed for the next test. The man can never catch a break from some of the stupid mongs on here.

He can't shield them for a day. The point that Indian batting can handle the SA pacers has already been proven. The priority was to get through the rest of the day uninjured and without any incidents. Hopefully they will be able to put it all together in the second test.

At times, I fear that the stupidity on this forum could halt evolution....

It is a valid criticism though, isn't it ? Making South Africa bat again would have been a positive for India, right ?

That was the main point!

There is a SOLID difference in,

South Africa won by an innings and 25 runs

&

South Africa won by 9 wickets

No he wasn't doing it because of injury.

Both Laxman and Sachin are doing it since quite a while now.

I remember Sachin doing it with RP singh in the last Australian tour too and it paying off ,also with Harbhajan.

Both the options are as likely to succeed.
It is NEVER gonna succeed in this situation, which is my point. It works when runs mean something and if those runs are gonna put pressure on the opposition. In this instance, and with this guy's batting ability, it was always gonna blow on our faces. It is all very well to have faith in tailenders but their batting should be good enough to deserve that faith in the first place. Yesterday night, for instance, Sachin refused a single early in the over off Steyn to protect Sreesanth. Are you trying to tell me that Sree improved overnight as a batsman or that Unadkat is a better bat in these condtions than Sreesanth????? 8-)

I have two problems with that

To what end? Defeat by how much is going to remain a footnote. The important thing is that there were at least 5 indian top order bats who got some runs on the board.

On one hand you don't expect them to survive five balls in an over. On the other hand you expect Tendulkar to carry them by shielding them to score 30+ runs. People gave credit to Laxaman for his belief in Ojah and Ishant, because it worked out. Here Sachin believed in these guys to keep out the balls and it didn't work out.

Do you realize how trivial it is to be picking up on that? Importantly, you are barking up the wrong ****ing tree. If the Indian bowlers and fielders didn't conceded 600+ runs at near 5 an over, there was every chance of saving this test. It was not Sachin who gave up.

Personally think that it's an important knock in the context of the series as a whole. If India had just rolled over and been done by an innings and 200 runs, there's little to be taken out of the game and South Africa's attack looks a lot more intimidating, even to those players who didn't get runs.

It's not like South Africa just sit there and let him make runs because they have two days remaining, they need to try and get the guy out because he is good enough to bat for two days straight. When you've had your pants pulled down like India did over the first few days, it's a lot easier to roll over meekly and put your eyes on the next game than make a stand like Sachin and others did.
Yeah, what Sachin did is infinitely better than what England did on the final morning of the most recent Test.

IMO they should get Munaf in the side! Need to just pretend that UMADKAT or that other no name dude got injured.

Ideal bowling line-up for the next test:

Zaheer (decent swing bowler)
munaf (accurate seam bowler)
Ishant (good seam bowler and can bowl at a decent pace)
Harbhi (ummm a spinner who bowls darts :p)

There's no room for sreesanth since he's got mental issues

Didn't Kapil Dev once hit three (or was it four ?) consecutive sixes to save the follow on once ? Wouldn't it have been nice if Tendulkar had tried to emulate him ? Surely it isn't too much to expect from a batsman of his calibre ? Even if he didn't think he could hit out, he could have at least tried to delay the inevitable, couldn't he ? A batsman's job is to make it as hard as possible for the opposition. Making South Africa bat after they secured a first innings lead of nearly five hundred would have been a massive positive for India.

I am not blaming Tendulkar for the defeat at all ; his performance is one of the few positives India can take from this test.
