Few talking points with the main one being the inclusion of Samit Patel. Seems to suggest to me that if he can lose some weight before the start of the World Cup then he's their man to play in the second spinner role behind Swann. Or at the very least be in the squad.

That'd be the side I see us going with. The only possible change I see would be Fats Patel not passing the fitness test and being replaced by Adil Rashid or maybe James Tredwell, though I'd go with Rashid.

Yeah, originally I had Wright in the last spot but thought both he and Bopara would be overkill.
I love Wright but I hope we choose Bopara over him, better finisher and is not much worse with the ball. While I might back Wright to keep it a touch tighter, he can get through some good death overs, I reckon Bopara is more likely to pick up a wicket or 3.

I think the selectors will want a backup to Swann/Yardy. Swann's not going to be their for the start of the World Cup so it'll be interesting. But if Yardy's bowling goes the distance I think they'll want to replace him with a like for like. Same goes for if Swann breaks down, Yardy as your only "spinner" in a subcontinental World Cup is asking for trouble.

Not sure if we need Shahzad in that last spot. Let's say one of Jimmeh/Broad/Bresnan break down, you've still got 30 banker overs from 2 of those + Swann. That means you need to get 20 from Yardy, Bopara, Collingwood, Trott. Could be seen as a bit risky, but the option is definitely there.
Big part in that decision will be Broad's fitness leading up to the tournament.

Paul Collingwood and Graeme Swann - England's second Test match-winner - have been given permission to miss the start of the quest to win the World Cup, which follows hard on the heels of this Ashes tour.
Both players' wives are expecting babies in the middle of February and they have been told by the management they can stay at home until after the births, even if it means missing warm-up games against Canada and Pakistan in Dhaka on February 16 and 18.

England's first World Cup game is against Holland in Nagpur on February 22, by which time both are expected to be back with England.

I'd have thought James Taylor would be included, seeing as barely-finge players Stevens, Adams, Dernbach etc. are there.

Bell played towards the end of the summer largely due to the fact we dropped Pietersen. Who would you suggest makes way for KP in the team other than Bell?
I understand that he might deserve a place in the squad, as he was in crash hot form last year, but I don't really see the need for a specialist batsman in the squad, especially when you can basically pick Bopara as one with his bowling as an added bonus.

Why would Patel be a gamble? Did well enough in his ODI outings to date. Useful batsman and a useful spinner. Represents far less of a gamble than Tremlett in the LO format.

Agree about Taylor, along with others like Alex Hales perhaps. Not sure what form he was in this season mind. But at the end of the day there are much larger questions over our allrounders and the makeup of our bowling attack than our top 6. Darren Stevens is more likely to displace Luke Wright than Taylor is to leapfrog any of our batsmen IMO.

Seems as though Hales was quite average, a shame. IIRC he got off to a really good start in List A cricket.

Indeed. Wave of the future, that boy.

No disrespect to Stevens, who had a v good 2010, but he's a thirty something journeyman whose medium pace will be slaughtered at the highest level.

Don't share your enthusiasm for Woakes tho. Needs to add a couple of yards before he steps up.

Would rather hope Bopara's not in there because he's not good enough to be honest.

Bopara is OK but England have better players running around so he shouldn't be needed tbh.

Well England's first ODI is done and it seems that they won't get the chance to play another before the squad is announced.

The batsman currently playing are bound to go, as will Paul Collingwood, who is still very much part of the set up and I'm not quite prepard to let go of him yet. If Collingwood can regain some form, he should be in the XI ahead of Trott, as he possess much more versatility in his batting and is a much better all-round option.

Anderson, Broad and Bresnan is our main attack for me. There's enough pace, variety and nous in there to form a strong bowling unit. They'd also be three of our top fielders while Broad and especially Bresnan add batting depth.

One key question that's been answered by my standards is that Ajmal Shahzad will have to go ahead of Tremlett. Trem can be shaky in ODIs, doesn't have much of a recent record and was pretty ordinary at the MCG on Sunday. Shahzad, on the other hand has impressed all tour and would also be much more suited to the wickets in Asia.

As for spin, Swann is a dead cert, as is Mike Yardy. I'm sure Yardy will be worked out eventually but he seems to have formed an effective partnership with Swann and he's a clever cricketer, a good man to have in the side. They will need a back-up spinner in the subcontinent and while Rashid is exciting he isn't the finished article yet. Losing Swann would be a major blow but Tredwell would be an adequete like-for like replacement.

I'm not sure on the back-up wicketkeeper call, as I haven't heard whether or not Keiswetter will be fit. Nonetheless, I would vote for Prior ahead of him anyway. I think Prior is in some good form right now that we need to capitalise on, and he and Trott can add some flexibility to the batting order if necessary.
