Just out of curiosity . .

Why hasn't Hussey ever been in contention for the top job?

Probably his age IMO.
If he is good enough to play . . .

Cant make a bad stop=gap at least. Kumble was pretty old when India decided on him as a stop gap.

Hussey is the only one who looks like a test player in this lot :-)

Whatever it takes!!!
Loved how the 9 commies talked up Ponting. Nicks his first scoring shot between 5 guys behind the wicket on the offside = lucky. Nicking to first slip and not taken = lucky, even though it would have been a good catch had it been pulled off. And apparently, he doesn't have any luck and is batting beautifully..

I have said this before.. Channel 9 is worse than any commentary team out of India, EVER. And I am including the stupid hindi commentators here...

HB I am not sure any Channel commentator can beat Arun Lal in terms of being awful. Arun Lal is right up there with the worst of the worst.

Australia v England, 3rd Test: Ponting's time is running out as his team slips away | Cricket Features | The Ashes 2010-11 | ESPN Cricinfo

The time has come to speak in the past tense of Ponting as a great batsman. Sparks may remain but the periods of sustained excellence have gone. Ponting walks to the wicket on reputation and has been leaving without regular results. He has played 24 Tests since the start of last year and averaged 39.87, including series against West Indies and New Zealand, and two against Pakistan. A No.3 who previously created fear has become a shadow.

Well, Ponting can take solace in the fact that you have to be a great player in the first place for the obituaries to come out when things start going wrong.
