I've seen England do this plenty of times, bowl turd at the end of a day then come back strongly the next morning. That's when the big test comes, IMO.

Didn't pick it up at all I think. Good signs from Johnson. Harris trying too hard looking for the miracle ball.

As important as lasting until the morning for the openers is that they've mostly seen off the new ball. The Kookaburra infamously doesn't stay new much longer than 15 overs or so, so to use up 12 overs of it tonight without loss is a major gain.

Johnson looked better, still 90% of balls comfortably left though.

Harris looked very poor, dissapointed as he was standout bowler last test.

Hilfenhaus did nothing but be solid as per, not a major wicket threat though.

Siddle bowled some horrid balls but beat the bat once.

Overall looked ok but i'd still back England to get 400.

That should have been the most difficult session England will have to face, and given they dealt with it pretty damn comfortably, it's fair to say we are pretty ****ed now.

Well today couldn't have gone any better really. Just need to see off the opening hour tomorrow and then set about batting all day and well into the next. Lets hope we don't get ahead of ourselves and play sloppily thinking the job is done.

I'd take being 300-4 at close of play tomorrow, just grind the buggers into the dirt.

Still don't think this is completely true. If you bowl in the right areas and get a bit of movement (which you can with the kookaburra after 15 overs)then you can still be a threat. If Australia bowl absolute ****, like the last two tests, then it wouldn't make any difference if they changed to a new pill every 10-15 overs.

Of course the most likely thing to give the batsmen grief is to bowl accurately and with pace or guile. It's pretty redundant how new the ball is if you're not using it properly.

But the new ball is always an important weapon for the bowling side, and to see it off without loss isn't to be underestimated both tactically and psychologically.
