Ricky ponting should give up

I do think he should step down as captain if we lose the Ashes. What on earth would be the point of a declining, 36 year old, three-time Ashes loser retaining the captaincy? I really like Rick as a bloke and he's an absolute champion player. But geez, he's 36 and even SWaugh and Border were given a bit of a push right at the end.

I think the players are letting down tbh...especially batting..he is part of it of course but i am talking him being the captain..he hasn't made terrible decisions as a captain on the field per say. But yea...he is losing support because his players are not backing him up much...

Moreover, i think the selection has been pretty ordinary. Nathan should have been picked instead of Beer...

I think, in the field at least, he's trying too hard as captain. As BoyBrumby said, he changes the field every couple of overs and, as Peter Roebuck said in the paper the other day, the field placings have just got far too funky. As he said, at various stages there were three gullies, three guys out on the hook/pull, and three shortish covers.

What about, especially for our modest bowling group, we keep the plans simple and bowl and a consistent line on offstump and set (and leave) the field accordingly.

If he lose the Ashes, I am not sure what sort of command he'll continue to hold in the team, even if it is ODI team.

Shhhhhh he lost a series to sri lanka and india surely thats enough to taint his perfect world cup record.... How quickly everyone forgets aye :laugh:

Why? Those losses didn't happen in the World Cup, so have nothing to do with his record in that tournament.

I remember that series marsh watson and white destroyed there attack iirc...

But mentioning that would make ponting seem like a good captain and we cant have that can we...

The lost series is all that matters apparrently :(

Marsh didn't really perform apart from his slow paced 100. It was White & Hussey iirc, Ponting also chipped in with runs almost every match.

Yeah nobody remembers those, it's all the series Ponting lost that sticks on people's memory, despite having the most incredible captaincy record anybody has seen in the history of the game, anyways...

Ponting is still one of the best batsmen in the world.

As for captaincy goes he is as mediocre as he has always ben. Al that has changed is that Australia has lost the players that made them the team they once were. The least Australia needs to do, as far as Ponting is concerned, is to make the best of his great batting capabilities and for that alone he should be relieved of the captaincy.

It does not matter who replaces Ponting as captain just as it wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't made him the captain when they had a great team. Someone else would have still led the great side they were to the top spot and someone will still lead them to struggle in the middle of the rankings today.

Nothing is going to change till the team improves in its overall capabilities vis-a-vis those above it. So remove Ponting from the captaincy to improve the batting of the side for Ponting minus the captaincy should only bat better than he is able to do today.

The difference a captain makes to a side is only so much. So there is no point in reading too much into what will happen after Ponting as captain or who will replace him. Someone will. I am not going to nominate anyone but it is clear that it has to be someone whose name is not Ricky Ponting.

What is important is to get him to bat at his best and for that have mercy on him and get him out of the leadership position so that people stop blaming him for all of Australia's woes.
