*Official* Third Test at the WACA

3 innings, yes, but with a serious and obvious weakness against the short ball.
I think if anything, that was the thing which was overhyped. But whatever the case, he has concentrated on improving that aspect of his game since. I think Strauss actually acknowledged that.

i'll play this.

watson
hughes
ponting
clarke
hussey
haddin
smith
johnson
hilfenhorse
harris
bollinger

no specialist spinner needed imo WACA has a rock hard pitch which does not breakup.Midge has to play cos he's the only bloke we have right now who can provide that spark we need to turn the table around. He might bowl his usual pies but right now we have to take that risk plus waca extra bounce will help him a bit more. Also will persist with both Doug and Rhino if they are fully fit.Hilfenhaus takes siddle's spot just to add a bit of swing to the attack which has 3 hit the deck type bowlers.

For Australia's dilemma at the top of the order, I would have reverted back to Phil Jaques if he had displayed some creditable form of late, but he really seems to be struggling. He used to be so reliable at the top of the order, but even in England this summer, he struggled to have any impact, and only made three fifties in 15 innings, with no tons. Cannot understand why he's underperforming so much, but now would not be the right time to select him for Australia.

Which leaves Hughes as the stand-out option. It's a selection that won't worry England, and as suggested in an earlier post, England will feel they can deal with Hughes pretty emphatically, whether through the short balls at the body or bowling the line he pushes out at around off stump, like how Tremlett removed him at Tasmania.

He could surprise England, his record shows he scores runs, he takes chances, doesn't always look secure, but he scores runs. Personally am confident we can do a number on him, but we shall see.

Can someone tell me if stuart clark is still active?
94 wickets @23.86 is impressive stuff!!!
Yes he still plays for New South Wales, captains them also if memory serves me right.

Has supposedly lost his nip, and ultimately is not as effective as he once was, though going off his stats this season he still looks to be a useful bowler, whether he's of Test standard now I don't know. Suppose it'd be like England going back to Matthew Hoggard if our attack was struggling.

I don't mind who comes into open for the Aussies, it's just no possible to replace Katich, and that's the real bonus as far as England are concerned.

The pressure on Hughes (assuming he gets the nod) will be immense and if he gets out early/cheaply, then his confidence could be shot to pieces. However if he comes in and plays well and gets a decent score, it could be exactly what the Aussies need to instill a bit of confidence and put in a good batting performance.

I don't know a lot about the pitch or predicted weather for the game, but I would love to see England bowl first and put Australia under real pressure....if conditions allow.

International Captain
Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin

that's the easy part....bowlers however...

Johnson/Bollinger/Siddle/Hilfenhaus/Harris/Copeland/Cameron

Doherty/Hauritz/Smith/O'Keefe

I'd go with:

Harris
Copeland
Cameron
O'Keefe

What have we got to lose.....go with the form :)

It's interesting, because (before his Test debut) there were ravings about him mentally. More in the fact that he never ever lets anything that has gone on the ball before affect him. You can see it in how, it doesn't matter how many times he's played and missed or whatever, when the ball is in his zone he still absolutely smashes it.
Sounds like the sort of character that might come in handy right now for Australia.

Yeah for all the talk of England having 'worked him out' I was quite happy to see him out of the side coming into this series, he certainly has something about him. Likely to always be a divisive player (Hayden) but think he will make a lot of test runs.

Hmm, Hughes is someone England feel they have a big psychological edge on.
He's also someone who averages over 50 in Test cricket.

Geez, what do people want out of these young players?

Averages of 80, triple centuries in the their last start?

If only the same standards were applied to the incumbents over the past 18 months!!!

If some of these people had have had their way, guys like Warne, McGrath, Hayden, Ponting, Slater, Martyn, SWaugh, Langer etc, would have debuted years and years later than they actually did.

WIth young players, it's not all about the perfect set of stats, or the reddest of red hot latest form. It's quality and potential too!

Yeah, I haven't seen him bowl in a while but at the very least he does keep it tight more often then not. Although these days he would be behind Cameron and Copeland for test selection.
