Mate, of his total 54 Tests, he's averaged 35 for the last 34 of them. So for almost two thirds of his Test career, he's been bloody mediocre. It seems to me much more likely that his original 20 Tests came within a very good purple patch, and that since then he's come down a bit, and age has caught up with him.Mate its not as if he just hasn't scored any runs at all in the last 2 years, he has scored almost 2000 runs @ 35 which isn't terrible for an out of form batsman, and if ODI doesn't mean anything then why does the ODI form of so many blokes flunk along with their test form!?
Hussey has had a lot of scores of 60's and had he converted some of them into 100's then we won't even be having this debate right now.
The thing is Hussey is one of the few experienced blokes we have left in the team, and I would atleast give him one more game to fix things.
I did a double-take when I saw that. Oh well, what we can take from this is when both Hussey and North get out for <20 between them, hopefully Midge won't let the tail roll over.Mitch got a ton today :awsm:
And apparently, before this match, his FC average and his test average was exactly the same (22.88). Which is a rather startling coincidence.
Yeah our batting is a disgrace, but I wouldn't say the 4 you've mentioned have so much talent. Carseldine is a terrible starter, Townsend has not convinced me that he's up to first class level, Dunk is only just starting out and needs time to develop his longer game and is probably batting a little too high. I agree with you on Broad that he looked very talented and I really wanted him to play for Australia eventually. He seems a very long way off at the moment, but I hope he becomes a top notch domestic opening bat.QLD batting has been so bad this season, Carseldine, Dunk, Townsend, Broad, so much talent not producing, not a single batsmen look to be averaging even 30 this season so far.
Swan is awesome, such an underrated cricketer. When Harris and Cutting are back, the selectors will go with youth again in Walter and Feldman meaning Swan is on the outer once again.*will. I mean, he scored one whole ton last year!
Tom Moffat's hitting runs in grade and Futures but probably not enough of those 50's have been converted to really push for a spot.
SA 3/10. Oye. Swan with 9 in the game so far.
Watch him pull himself to a magnificent century at the Gabba!Again pull-shot??? ffs
If he doesn't give up the pull shot now, he's doomed.
I wouldn't say he's horrible now. Horrible was what he was during the SA series when he couldn't place his off-stump to the nearest postcode.Hussey isn't just in decline, he's finished. Such a horrible batsmen now.
A few years ago, maybe. Right now, nether are doing enough at grade or Futures level to even get a spot ahead of Aaron O'Brien, let alone getting one for a game or two. Just picking them won't help if they don't feel as if they earned their spot.Confidence plays a huge part in a spinners development and evolution, likes of Cullen and Bailey haven't been shown much love by the Redbacks, the moment they have had a bad game or two they have been dropped.
Bailey's only in if they need a second spinner, tbh. He didn't take a 5-fer last year and gave up runs far too quickly. Peter Sleep was similar with the ball to Bailey but he was good enough to bat top-6 for SA. Bailey has shown signs of being able to bat well but he basically has to be picked as a bowler. If he was good enough to bat higher, I'm sure he'd have a season ticket for SA.IIRC, Bailey took a 5-fer last season and was looking good, so why is he even not being considered this season?
I was talking about the rub of the green not going his way (except the last SCG test), he has had some umpiring decisions that have gone against him after he made good starts which certainly doesn't help.Mate, of his total 54 Tests, he's averaged 35 for the last 34 of them. So for almost two thirds of his Test career, he's been bloody mediocre. I find your point that we wouldn't be having this conversation if he'd converted his 60s into 100s a bit silly as well. If Glenn McGrath had converted all his 10s into 100s he'd have been a world class batsman (or at least Marcus North), but he didn't. The fact that Hussey isn't going on with any of his starts is a very telling story, IMO.
I just don't understand how much more evidence the selectors or the fans need to see that he's not going to come good again, and while there may be a tiny, tiny chance that he does, it's surely time to move on and invest in some youth.
Yeah well... mate it ain't as if the Redbacks could do any worse than what they have doing over the last few seasons.A few years ago, maybe. Right now, nether are doing enough at grade or Futures level to even get a spot ahead of Aaron O'Brien, let alone getting one for a game or two. Just picking them won't help if they don't feel as if they earned their spot.
Giving up runs for wickets, SA could use that. But when they're also not penetrative with the ball and, basically, a part-timer like D Harris is as likely to take wickets as they are, well......
All that said, it surprises me SA took Bailey to South Africa but have barely used him this year.

I would think Clark would be staying as captain until the end of this season at least. Maybe employ some rotation?Sad news for McDonald..
Just wondering when Hazlewood and Starc return, should Stu Clark be dropped or made to be the bowling coach? It would be a big call as he's captain but it would be bad to see one of Cameron, Copeland, Hazlewood,Starc left out for Clark!
