See, in this day and age they can have days where they just look impregnable, it's how they roll.

Ponting plays (or played, and now he can't really go on with starts) for a side where everyone scores runs, and typically he'd probably declare before he got to the triple-ton mark. As for Sachin, he's a #4, so India probably have scored some runs or else he just sinks with them.

Lara, I'm not sure about. Maybe he's just a freak.

Up until 15 ago that'd be a lot different though. Barath, Junior Bravo and Nash have all chipped in with valuable runs.

Randiv has been 2 for bugger all against the others for ages, Mendis just cashed in though.

To add to what Jono said, someone like Taylor and Jayawardene too scored triple tons, so that shows being aggressive isn't everything but having the right application is more important.
I think its pretty safe to say that no matter how good some of the modern day greats are, they don't apply themselves that well and there have been numerous occasions when people like Ponting, Sachin, Hayden, Kallis have just thrown their wicket away after crossing the hundred mark.

That collapse should give some indication of why WI adopted such a cautious approach this morning. Gayle mentioned their last tour of SL yesterday and I imagine this match would have been on his mind. Collapsed on the second day after dominating day one and ended up being thrashed.

Seems like Gayle's a lot like Lara in this case - he's brilliant sometimes, but they're very inconsistent. Ditto Sehwag.

He is the new Anil Kumble, as long as you play him as a medium pacer you would be fine, but if you start playing for turn then lbw or bowled comes into play in a big way.
