Van Wyk's not eligible yet, Nevin didn't even get a contract from Wellington, Austin-Smellie has only played a couple of games and, aside from Young, none of the others have done anything even remotely close to what Hopkins has with the bat. If Young's a significantly better keeper then he probably should be playing but I've heard nothing to suggest he is.

This is only his third Test, and only his second as first choice. I think you're dealing with too small a sample size to really get anything from that. I don't care what he does in ODIs.

Yeh, I thought van Wyk had been eligible since April too.
When Young was in the squad that played tests in Sri Lanka, Glenn Turner said "We believe Reece Young is the next best gloveman and is the standby keeper for the tests. It is too important a position to risk not having a specialist."
He also said "We see McGlashan as someone who can improvise and bat in the limited-overs and keep wickets if there is an injury. But we prefer Hopkins in the one-dayers."
As for stats, Young, Hopkins and van Wyk all averaged in the 50s for FC cricket last season and 44+ in the season before that, but they all benefited from good batting decks at their home venues in Aucks and Rangiora. Justifying Hopkin's selection on stats is pointless imo.
So it should be pretty simple selection decision, just pick the guy with the best glovework.
edit: I remember years ago Young used to always play dodgy sweeps and had pretty poor shot selection, but he's scored lots of runs recently and has gone alright for NZA.

I have seen a fair bit of Young batting and tbh he always looked crap and up until recently had the crap record to show it. Pretty astounded if he is really a good bat now. Whilst he doesn't have the same wizened old man looks, he is over 30 now as well.

Yup, his batting was definitely crap up to 2007.
Dunno what he's changed since then, but he's managed to have 2 and a half decent seasons since.
It will be interesting to see if he can score similar numbers this season now that he won't benefit from an Auckland home ground, will probably still cash in at Rangiora tho if Canterbury play there.
Best pure keeper in the country by a fair distance.
