To be fair, if you're not familiar with Psmith in the City you're at a disadvantage. But that should be compensated for by your actual / constructive knowledge of Sam Coe and that particular innings of Larwood's

Well yes you've got the main part of it, which is being out for 98.

Leaving Larwood aside, what was so unlucky about the other two dismissals?

Well according to my sibling, who strangely enough didn't appreciate being rung about this at 10.30 on a saturday night, jackson was put off by someone moving behind the bowler's arm

Was the Coe instance at Lords? - if so a fluked stumping?

Truly brilliant stuff from your sibling. The opening chapter of Psmith in the City is memorably entitled "Mr Bickersdyke Walks Behind the Bowler's Arm". Hence MJ's demise on 98.

Which leaves just poor Sam Coe. And yes, it was a stumping, and it was at Lord's, and it was a bit of a fluke. I think you're playing with me now. Why was it special?

I'm not playing with you Mr Z - and I have now upset another member of my family (I woke Mrs Fertang up while looking for a 1901 Wisden which didn't tell me the answer anyway) but I think you'll probably tell me it was the first first class wicket taken by a googly?

Correct. Brilliant stuff Fred, I thought the Psmith reference too obscure, and rather regretted the fact that while 2 of them were distinctly unlucky, Larwood wasn't (as far as I'm aware), which detracted somewhat from the symmetry.

Over to you I think

EDIT: I should add that the ball bounced 4 times before reaching poor old Sam Coe. He's probably turning in his grave now (though not necessarily in the direction he thought he was going to turn)

Excellent question it has to be said

Mine isn't as clever but here goes

What links Richie Benaud, Brian Yuile, Bruce Yardley and Sylvester Clarke?
