Indian Domestic Season 2010-11

Arjun,Mukund has not been picked either for the India -Australia series.

Here's my post about the selection from the tour thread-

That ODI indian team selection is weird .

Abhinav Mukund got called up in the test squad,so could not play the Challenger trophy ,and as a result Dhawan overtook him for the ODI team selection as a opener in what is a almost guaranteed starting position.
This despite Abhinav Mukund being one of the top players in all 50 overs domestic matches last season.

Though i am glad Shikhar Dhawan has finally found his place into the Indian team. Been a fan since His U-19 days where he was player of the tournament in the WC.
Should have been selected earlier for mine liking but a run out in a Challenger trophy game where both he and Uthappa were doing well, and Uthappa at the same time scoring a century in the same match cost him a selection ahead of Robin Uthappa in the Indian team which he was way more likely for before the event.

Poor Rahane also must be wondering why his very good form in the challenger has not got him in the ODI team ahead of Rohit Sharma.
I would have selected Pujara ahead of Yuvraj or Rohit too.Not selecting him after his test selection is strange too. He is not a t20 batsmen ,but he is a pretty good ODI batsmen. And it would be helpful to have one more solid bat among the trailblazers.

As for the bowlers Glad Ishant Sharma has not been picked.Would have dented whatever confidence he gained in the first test to have him play The ODI's .

And Pujara showing today why he should have been picked too.

Oops...sorry...mistook Dhawan for Mukund, who may be the better player. Dhawan, though, has more OD experience with impressive stats.

I don't mind Rohit or Yuvraj in the team, but Rahane's a questionable exclusion. That Challenger nonsense is no benchmark for selection, as the Hazare and Deodhar tournaments are more valuable, but he's just right all round- good player of spin, decent against pace, finds the gaps, hits the big shots and runs hard and fast. Even when he isn't batting, he's a top-notch fielder. While Yuvraj and Rohit are still, problems notwithstanding, worth their places, Jadeja surely isn't. As said of Gavaskar junior on an internet portal, he isn't much of a batsman. Nor is he a bowler. Yuvraj, Raina and even Rahane are better all-rounders than Jadeja. Likewise a few bowlers.

Ishant would be a decent pick, as he just got back in the groove in Mohali. His last ODI series was quite good, as he took wickets cheaply, and while his economy is high, he can get wickets quickly, at an impressive strike rate. Praveen and Munaf, on the other hand, don't get wickets. You can't dominate an ODI series, or compete with the Aussies, if you don't take wickets. Ishant would surely be more valuable than these two- although Praveen is useful more as a utility player plus than as a frontline seamer.

Only one genuine spinner? The selectors have lost it totally now.

While attention of Indian fans is centered around the ongoing ODI series against Australia, the SMAT goes on, unnoticed. It's not surprising, given the lack of stars or even lack of quality here. Even then, Kerala upset Karnataka, with a little help from VJD (the local alternative to D/L) and rains. So far, Karnataka batsmen Mayank Agarwal and then Robin Uthappa lead the runs tally. Mayank Agarwal is a nineteen-year-old who bats like Sehwag, and in three games, has shown a lot of promise. He hasn't faced the strong TN side yet. Leading the wickets tally, though, is a surprise so far- a bowler from Kerala and one from Goa. Yo Mahesh isn't too far behind, with five wickets in three. Surely a contender for a limited-overs spot in some time- despite his economy, he's got a very impressive strike rate.

Outside of that, East Zone squads have been announced. Essentially, it is the Bengal show, barring an upset by Orissa, the only team there that can compete with them. Bengal have a strong side, with Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha and Laxmi Ratan Shukla being the top draw, and Ashok Dinda, Saurashish Lahiri and some slightly experienced Bengal players, not quite as impressive, but still formidable there in the East.

The funny thing about the SMAT is that Kerala qualifies for the knockouts, ahead of Karnataka, from the South Zone. While Karnataka were outclassed by TN, the better team, they were outdone by rain against Kerala, who don't have a single India prospect in their ranks. That is, unless you'll take a risk with Prasanth, their left-arm spinner. In fact, he seems a better bet than Ojha and Jadeja.

Other zones' squads are now announced. Baroda will miss Irfan, though Yusuf will figure. Last year's surprise package, Maharashtra, have retained a lot of their players, but it will be a surprise if they make it this time around. That still doesn't do much for the tournament, which is in danger of losing its relevance, like the Challenger Trophy and the Corporate Trophy.

Elsewhere, on Akash Chopra's blog, he suggests grooming Pujara as a limited-overs batsman. I'm not too sure how productive that will be (look at what an imbalance of ODI and FC cricket did to Yuvraj, Kaif and Uthappa), although he's worth the cap.

One more- watch out for Mayank Agarwal. His team's out of contention, but he's blazed away in that event, and looks a good prospect for an IPL team, and as a T20 specialist.

Has anyone seen Rahane bat? A 66.91 FC average is scary... whats that likely translate to for tests?

Rahane is a very good player of spin, like most subcontinental players. He tends to step down often, and is adept at hitting the big ones, but his prowess against quality pace isn't yet established. That, I guess, will happen if he faces bowlers from other countries. He'd often maintained a massive average in the domestic scene because the India stars are out on national duty, and there are no internationals from other countries, but he's done well in the few chances he got for India A and Board XI. He can make it ahead if he decides on his batting position, as he's often switched between opening and one-down. Making a Test debut is out of the question right now, as he doesn't help the balance of the team and the batsmen ahead are a lot better, but he should be a regular for ODIs.

All other zones begin, once South ends. Mumbai defeated Baroda by the final ball yesterday, with no side managing a big score- Baroda, batting first, could set up just 122. The bowling was tight at both ends, but somehow, Wasim Jaffer guided Mumbai to a win with a little less than 50. Yusuf Pathan scored just two in nine balls, but bowled four tight overs, wicketless. Outside of that, there were neither new T20 discoveries, nor good performances by top players. Baroda are sorely missing Irfan, apparently missing due to an injury.

Mohammed Kaif and Tanmay Srivastava played blistering knocks to take UP to over 180, with a little help from Chawla, but all the bowlers, including Chawla and T20 contender RP Singh, failed to defend the total. It seems Kaif is useful in T20 after all, much as Shilpa Shetty thought otherwise. He can make it as a lower-order player and specialist fielder. Mohnish Mishra, though a good bet for T20, failed in this game.

Also a surprise was seeing Akash Chopra, the strokeless wonder, score 71 of 42 for Rajasthan. Not in the scheme of things for Delhi, he's turned his batting around for Rajasthan. While he's out of contention for India and even North/Delhi, his presence will help that weak team a lot, and possibly add one more productive domestic player in the IPL. As for Delhi, their batsmen didn't make any big scores, but the contributions added up for what was a winning total for Delhi. The most memorable performance was that of Sumit Narwal- often ignored by the IPL teams, he scored 27 off 13 and then took two wickets. The experienced Rajat Bhatia took three wickets for Delhi, though he failed with the bat- a regular occurence, as he seems more of a bowler than a batsman here.

Where are the internationals?

The Ranji squads for Delhi and Orissa have been announced. We can forget about the Orissa tean biwm while Delhi coach Manoj Prabhakar has aimed to 'transform' the side, with three Ranji finals in five years as a goal. It appears a smart goal, and for what appears to be a bit of an assembly line for India, and more so other FC teams, it's a good squad. They will miss Sehwag, Gambhir, Ishant and Nehra (maybe not when India play Tests) but some younger players are rated highly in Delhi cricket circles. Let's just hope they've not been positioned there by influential office-bearers.

The Ranji Trophy will be telecast on Neo Sports. It's anybody's guess which matches will make it, but TN and Karnataka have a chance, and by a long shot, Mumbai and Delhi. They may spring up a surprise by throwing in a match featuring Orissa or Gujarat or Saurashra, all boring teams to watch.

We'll get back on SMAT after this last leg of the event.

Ranji Trophy is on, and Delhi vs Bengal is being played on a flat Kotla wicket, with Bengal batting first. Bengal are at 179/1, with the only wicket being Goswami, falling to part-timer Manhas. Rajat Bhatia is keeping a very tight line and length, and ten overs have gone for at least eighteen runs. If he was larger and stronger, he'd be an India prospect, with his superior batting. He's out of contention for Tests, but he's been bowling stump-to-stump, and not given scoring opportunities.

Bengal, on the other hand, haven't quite made the best use of a flat deck. Their running between wickets has largely been inadequate, but partnerships have been built. Arindam Das has scored 85 and looks solid, though not much of a mover.

Arjun, Was that an actual seaming pitch or a traditional Ranji snooker table?(If it is, It makes it even more freakier)

Crazy effort anyway.

I see Deepak Chahar is a bowler in the prabhakar mould according to this article.

One to look out for i guess.

Lalit modi to be fair to him,did a lot of work in Rajasthan and specially in the jaipur area in terms of Development of players and also brought in youngsters and other players from outside when he took over at RCA.

So won't be surprised if more young talent emerges out of the team in the next couple of years.
