*Official* Warne vs Murali Discussion

I don't think the comparison is apt. In tests, you can bowl any number of overs and you are likely to take many more wickets. In ODIs, it's 10 overs and likely few wickets per match. It's essentially a trade-off; do you want the person who is going to concede 2-3 runs per match; or possibly save you an over in terms of taking the same amount of wickets. For me, even that's not what makes me rate Warne; it's his incredible ability to step up when it matters. Did it in 96 and even more impressively in 99.

In the end, when you compare their cost per wicket in terms of runs and balls bowled is pretty similar. But because this is ODIs not all wickets need to be taken. However, taking an important wicket that is likely to turn the match is far more valuable than saving a few runs.

Look, I totally get why most people rate Murali ahead of Warne in ODIs. But for me; ODIs mean jack unless it's the WC. And I know who I'd take to the WC. What more as ODI players I'd much rather Warne as he is also likely to chip in twice as much with the bat negating the difference in their ER.
Ikki's WC Final >> WC Match >>>> Any ODI theory and the Aravinda de Silva is the best ODI player shocker. This has been dealt before.

If Warne was such a world cup final specialist, why did he bowl 10 overs for 58 without a wicket in 96 final? Wasn't too keen on winning that one perhaps. That it was played in sub-continent may have something to do with it.

Those of us old enough that our balls have dropped will remember he bowled with a damp/ wet ball in the evening session. What's your point? New numpties join in, but the direness of this thread just keeps on keeping on.

Even if he bowled with a dry ball, Ranatunga and Gurusinghe never had that much of respect for Warne, and added to that played Warne very well too.

Get the full context of the post and understand the sarcasm. I am not inane enough to make a point out of one or two matches. Keep personal attacks out of it. They don't show you in any good light.

Yeh the dew was definitely a big factor for all the spinners bowling second. Who was the bowler when Stuart Law dropped that regulation outfield catch in the 96 Final? Was it Warney??

Also don't forget that Warney was MOTM in the miracle semi final win against the Windies.

No, I don't think I will..

The evidence suggests you're plenty inane enough..

I laughed so much when that catch went down... it was a real dolly.

Yeah they were good players.

Their dominance of Warne is well reflected in SL's imposing Test record v Australia while they played... Oh wait...

Anyway, fwiw before I'm done in here for another six months, they were both great bowlers. Murali played more ODIs, and I would say he is marginally a better ODI bowler than Warne. Though tbf, as an Australian supporter who watched every home test or ODI Murali played in Australia, I never, ever had the slightest thought or remote fear he would run through our side. Never.

And if Warne cops **** for his record in India, then Murali must cop it for his here, because for the most part it looked like our blokes could have played him with a stick of celery.

Plenty. Just not to you..
Honestly, I don't see what has ticked you. I don't remember having engaged in any discussion with you. The first time that you do, you have to be this aggressive. If that's your attitude, you'd much better not say anything to me. Thank you.

Whatever it takes!!!

Aravinda is better spinner in WC finals and knock out games than Warne right? And he only played 1 WC lesser in the 95 to 99 period..

lol Burgey, so you agree the WC finals are the only ODIs that matter and that is what people should be judged on?

As far as I could see, Ankit was countering only that with his posts..

Burgey - cool it, this thread is going to be plenty dire if people start conversations with new participants by labelling them numpties and inane. Play the post not the poster please.
