Not a lot wrong with any of the Aussie young quicks either, far too early to be deciding who's going to be a success at the top level. They've all got positives and negatives at this point and, tbh, think you'd get a similar performance picking any of them.
Although its definately too early to say which one them will be a success at the top level.

ATS, i'd definately say George & Starc you would fairly good performances on them than any of them others. If you play them on bouncy deck.

Would also throw Alistair McDermott into this mix. Looks to have the raw tools to be a good swing bowler long term. His run up his just like his father & when he delivers its similar to Damien Fleming.

McKay always gets wickets, he steps up in odi's this lad. Wonder if he felt unlucky to not be in the test squad?

He's miles behind any of the other names mentioned, tbh. Has a booming outswinger but delivers it at a similar pace to what his Dad could now.

Ye he is behind them, just throwing his name inot the mix. Since i liked what i saw of him in the under-19 WC more than Hazlewood, who was the star.

Good game. Cameron White is a gun , his straight hitting is just plain destructive and a joy to watch. The bowling looks pretty weak to me for Australia, Mckay bowled well this game but I wouldn't back him to repeat those efforts because his bowling in the shorter formats has never been that great. Smith and Hauritz are very unlikely to bowl a full set of 10 overs to. Some of the young Indian players look very promising to, particularly Kohli.

I rate Hastings higher then Hopes and Hastings still has youth and time to develop further.
Agree with this. Hastings has got way more to work with in his bowling, probably more capable of hitting sixes as well.

Well I seen his U19 WC performance and it was awesome. In comparison both Starc and George look like wild and inconsistent bowlers, plus I haven't seen them get any significant movement off the pitch.

Hazlewood is the only one that can bowl accurately at the top of off stump ball after ball. With Starc you get the feeling he is bowling way too many half-volleys outside off stump and George is bowling too short and legside-ish.
Have you seen George bowl much? At his best he is one of the most accurate bowlers in Australian cricket.

Clarke may have done well all things considered; but his serious lack of ability to up his innings will bite us in the ass come WC time, I fear.

Being 2/16 doesnt mean you lower your sights to a 240 or 250 target, which is where we wouldve ended up and been truly thrashed if not for freak hitting by White. One of Hussey or Clarke shouldve gone harder much earlier, or taken the powerplay earlier which was not handled well anyway later in the innings. We scored better without the powerplay. I'm all for there being a law that says the powerplay must be taken before 40 overs, the middle period on odi's has remained the same old single taking exercise it has been since the 70's.

Bigger issue for mine is that the tempo of Clarke's innings is risky if he doesn't kick on to a big score. Eating up balls then pushing on to a ton is fine (as I said, put that knock and the last 5 on top of even a mildly decent start and 300+ is the result) but if he spends 60 balls getting 25, all that building looks wasted. Because he doesn't score really quickly any more, he needs to make up for the extra caution with more 50+ scores and let the other guys take the risks. As long as he's doing that, there's a place for him in the team.

A good stand opening is crucial with the balance of the team the way it is. There's enough hitting power down the order to do what happened last night fairly regularly and make up for any slow and low scores by Clarke. With the line-up as it is, Clarke has to bat 3 but yeah, without a good start, the pressure ramps up quickly on the batters below. Not sure of the exact solution either; batting White at 3 and dropping Clarke isn't too bad but he probably won't be as consistent with his scores and no-one hits the ball as well or as regularly as he does down the order so it's a big loss batting him higher and a huge responsibility expecting him to build an innings and go nuts at the end (seriously, very few players can do it).

I'm sure plenty of fans were upset Warner wasnt picked, even if he doesnt come off at least he wont take up too many balls, like Gilly, but if he only half comes off then Clarke wont be forced into blocking for 30 overs like the pitch is a bloody minefield. I like White coming in after 35 overs, dont want him getting out for a low score early in the innings when his danger at the end is crucial, but we need someone like even Smith coming in earlier and just having a go, especially if we are only 2 or 3 down by halfway.

Can anyone really see Ponting being easily replaced at 3? Always has done a magnificent job at going hard and attacking.

Exactly. Ponting not playing ODI's is a huge loss. Not because he would hit out at the end, a few notable and awesome innings aside. His tempo was fairly consistent throughout his innings, it was just really high. That he was aggressive from the top, no matter the start he got from the openers, was what made him an all-time ODI great.

Reckon if Shaun Marsh doesn't score soon, his spot might be in danger from Warner. Don't think any ODI team can carry a top 3 of blokes who start slow but don't kick on. Interesting you mention Dean Jones, that was exactly why he was the heartbeat of the Aussie team then; Marsh and Boon built the innings like his son and Paine look to but if one of them got out early, it was Jones' push-and-run that got them to good totals. Without that, it leaves White and others with a lot to do.

Just a bloody champ. Didnt think Dean Jones would be replaced easily back in 94, but it wasnt too long before Punter asserted himself really well in 95, i'm all too happy to admit i'm a Ponting fan boy. Never has he been accused of using all the hot water. And he hasnt been afraid to hit out or get out, knowing the resources to come.

Pretty amazed Kohli doesn't have a test cap yet. I know the guys who've been picked ahead of him like Raina, Pujara and Badrinath obviously have some ability, but Kohli looks like he's going to be a serious player for India, in all likelyhood Sachin's successor at number 4, and he's already demonstrated the mettle for international cricket.

No one was saying that at 2-16. Didn't think there was a hell of a lot wrong with his knock tbh. He might have hit out more in the last few overs but I'd suggest he was rat-arsed from the heat and humidity.

Happy to bag him a lot of the time but I thought today he was ok.
He got lucky that White did what he did. Otherwise it would have looked a lot worse when India crossed what would have been the target in the 44th over.

Can't rely on Victorians to save the day every match.

For the record, it's not Clarke's lack of boundary hitting ability that is what is wrong with his batting. It's his inability to actually rotate the strike when he's unable to hit boundaries that results in a strike rate of 79, and costs his team the game. 50-60 dot balls is ridiculous.

Dead set if Australia ended up with 3/260-270 (which was looking very possible), as Uppercut said, that would have been unforgiveable. 289 was barely passable and that required the largest last 5 overs I've ever seen in an ODI or can remember in an ODI.

Who else bats at 3, though? Don't think there's anywhere else he can bat other than opening.
