Has it been a surprise? I don't mean that rhetorically, but a genuine question. What were the thoughts when he was announced captain at the time?
Considering how attacking he was as a batsman in his early days, the most surprising thing for me is how ridiculously defensive he is as a captain

At times it's like watching the under 12s with him placing guys on the boundary after a 4 has been hit or setting 8-1 fields because he is ****ting himself at the thought of runs

Works for him doesn't it? Yet to lose a test series as captain.

You're the second person to mention him in this thread today. Wonder who the first one was.

But nah seriously, I'm a bit sceptical of O'Keefe. He took 7/35 against Sri Lanka A - I don't really know what to make of that because the pitch was spinning like a top and all the spinners took cheap wickets, but to be fair you'd expect Sri Lanka A to be fair players of spin. That skews his stats a little bit, although you haven't taken the current match against SA into account - he took seven today (across two innings) and actually averages 23 now. I'll he honest and say he really doesn't look much at all, but unlike Hauritz and Smith he's actually done something at least. If I was going to play a spinner for the Ashes it'd probably be him, tbh.
No way should Hauritz be dropped for Smith, of all people. Mckeefe, maybe. But defo. not Smith.
He was third.

Did anyone else note how funny Peter George's celebration of his first wicket was? Completely unco, as if his muscle control had failed somewhat in the excitement. Basically ran down the pitch with an excited expression flailing his arms somewhat randomly

Just saw that 'Australian slide worse than WI slide' thread. Thats absurd. I honestly think if Australia make a few good selection changes, we could still be no. 1 in tests. Think about it, even with this flawed team we really challenged India at home. Imagine what could be possible with a reformation...
