He's 31. He's gone downhill since his debut. He's on borrowed time imo. So's Hussey.
Yeh he is 31? So? Thats not that old... He has only played 19 matches 8-) And considering he averaged around 57 after about 5 matches of course he is going to go downhill...

Hussey is someone who as gone downhill for the wrong reasons.

Ponting was a pup and actually averaged about 41 after 19 matches. Watson was consistently injured and was there as an all-rounder.

North's on the wrong side of 30 and if his FC record is anything to go by he'll get low 40s at best. Why waste our time? Bring someone like Khawaja or even Smith IMO.
He averaged 38.63 after 22 matches.

But anyway, I'm not saying North is the absolute best for no.6, Khawaja or someone else might prove better. I'm just saying that to judge someones average after a meagre 19 matches is just stupid. As it is, North's average of 37 isn't that far from his FC average of 43. So he probably won't improve that much more. That being said, there are suprisingly few Australian domestic batsmen who have a better FC than North.

And he averaged almost 48 after 34.

I think you're missing the point. The difference between a young player averaging what North averaging is that said player is likely to improve and get better. North isn't. He's already learned what he's learned and at best is going to be average. Averaging in the low 40s these days is no great feat.

Yeah to be fair though Ponting was picked arguably too early and his scoring habits were far less annoying.
I'm not having a go at him, I'm just saying its stupid to judge an average after just 20 matches. Also if you look at Pontings batting graph for that period, he actually had many clumps of little scores like North.

Lol @ Ponting. Everytime he comes over, He finds a way to contribute to an Indian win one way or another.

We salute you, Mr. Awesome-Captaincy-Tactics-Man.

If you were advocating that North would come good (like average 47-50) I'd have time for this argument. However, you're saying he'll do as well as his FC average so what is the point in keeping him? You're saying give him time to become a little better?

Yeh, but as I said, if you use FC average as a guage of a batsman's potential, there aren't very many in the domestic scene averaging more than North anyway. Only older guys like Rogers and Jaques (who are openers anyway) and really inexperienced guys like Khawaja whose average could plummet for all we know.

I'm sure he's crying in bed with his 2 WCs and oodles of Test captaincy records.

To put things into context, Dussey, who very few people would pick, averages nearly 55

I've been a great supporter of North but he's had more than ample opportunities and I simply cannot imagine him developing into a test batsman that averages 45 (minimum criteria IMO) so punt him
