I didn't like paine when he first came into the side. I still think he shouldn't be opening in ODI's and up until this latest series i was kind of wishing Wade hadn't gotten the chance (especially in the limited overs) but Paine has shown he has the goods in test cricket so far. Maybe i should rephrase on North, for me where he bats he should be more regular in making 50+ scores. Needs to boost his 0-20's when he isn't making hundreads. Maybe if the top performed it wouldn't be as noticable but i like my number 6 to be someone to save an innings and relied upon you an't deny when he is bad he is BAD

When do those centuries occur, and when do those failings occur?

No doubt this knock is a vital one, and has come at a crucial time. But that's not normally the Marcus North way.
Actually his centuries have come at both really necessary times and not so necessary. His Ashes contributions were quite vital, and as you said, so is this knock.

His last hundred came in pretty similar circumstances to this. That was the one where Clarke made 168. Before that was Headingley, in which Ponting had basically taken all the pressure off the entire middle order but that was such an unusual set of circumstances that it's hard to say much about that one. Cardiff obviously came after the top order had piled in on but his debut ton came in a somewhat tricky scenario.

He'll thank Dhoni for playing the spinners against him early on though. Looked very comfortable against them right from the start.

100 partnership. Critical stuff. Lot of extras.

Even Ian Bell made a century when nobody else in the lineup did. Lightning about to strike twice! (I'm saying that without actually being sure whether his previous tons were made with other centurions before him, btw) ed: goddamn it Jay, he's done it twice already

This is so surreal. I don't care if North gets out, and I'm ambivalent for his success. Any outcome (runs/wickets) is appealing to me.

backing North to have a decent Ashes his main problem seems to be swing early on and don't think there is much of that in Aus much depends on how Anderson is feeling.

Being a no.6 though, you can hardly expect him to have many centuries where the majority of the top 5 haven't scored. And if all of the top 5 haven't scored, then its likely the conditions are ridiculously hard, and you could hardly blame him for not scoring.

Hmmm... Paine has been really unsettled since drinks. Had a wide welly at a few that he shouldn't have.

Precisely, which is why I feel "oh, ______ is a soft player who only gets runs when the top 5 have scored" is often quite unfair.

So does this mean when India bat today it'll be a good batting track? Or is North really playing well? I just started watching then.

North is playing very well. Crap bowling though and poor field placements, I'd hope we do much much better than this.

Ah, now here come the rusted on "Clarke's a soft player who can't make runs when the team needs them!" folk.

Just saw that attempted sweep fall in the middle of an empty field, it's like the fielders are playing cards in cow corner.

Bat pad now at least.

Dhoni the master captain strikes again.

You set a field like that you don't deserve a top edge to go to hand. Shocker.

don't feel this is a road had there been a Muarli or Saqlain in the opposition it would have really worried India don't think Hauritz can do the same.

I dunno though, the wicket looks pretty lifeless aswell. And remember last match, Oz really toiled very hard and slowly in the first innings, yet when India came to bat they did it with a lot of ease (ironically ending up less than us though).

So with this innings, if out batsman are scoring at a good rate, I would expect the Indians to easily match it.

That had been coming for some time. Paine looked pretty bad post-drinks.

Oh lol, this again?

Oh lol.
