Just on Hussey, the raw stats don't tell the story of his 2009 Ashes. He was in dire form for the enitre series until his ton in the final innings of the series when chasing 546 (i.e. when the game gone to all intents and purposes) & even then 34.5 is acceptable at very best.

I think he's batting like a bloke petrified of failure from what I've seen of him of late. His 17 off 70-odd in the first innings here was an extreme example (saw him dead bat a rare long-hop from Ojha), he's become so set on occupation he's barely even looking to score anymore.

I think his form against Pakistan in 09/10 should maybe be viewed in this perspective, yes Pakistan have a very fine seam attack, but their batting resembled A. S. Laurel & O. N. Hardy opening for The Keystone Cops, so the pressure to perform wasn't there to the same extent as against teams with competent batting line ups.

Hussey's best innings against Pakistan came when Australia were in massive **** though, so it's not like he was just scoring when the pressure was off, at all. Admittedly that Test was highly dubious from a legitimacy POV though.

still fell Hussey is ggod enough to make runs in Australia horizontal strokes are easier to execute and the ball does not swing as much both conventional and reverse.

As should not scoring runs against them...as in June.
Apart from the knock where Kamran and Yousuf gifted him a century he was average.

Probably should have put a bigger disclaimer than "Not saying Hussey shouldn't be dropped", because my point was not that Hussey did well vs. Pakistan, or that his performances vs. Pakistan should allow him to stay in the side.

I was just disputing the fact that you can drop a player because of their performances against England and South Africa alone, and not take into account their performances against Pakistan. In this particular situation (let's ignore the dubiousness of Sydney for a second), Pakistan had a good bowling attack. So if Hussey did well agianst them, it should be taken into account. If he did poorly, that should also be taken into account.

There should not really be a 'big ticket' filter. Only a filter on the quality of the bowling attacks. Whether one team is box office or not is irrelevant.

Problem is Hussey and North together. If we fill the North gap then the flow on effects of a stabler will help the Huss out, IMO. If not drop him.

So 1. Replace North. 2. Re-evaluate how Hussey is doing after 6 months, if he hasn't improved, replace him. 3. Profit.

Must say i'm not confident of Hussey at all, i like him too. But he gets bogged down a lot. and doesnt go on with it. Bugger of a situation.

Next test starts Sat, right? Was reported on Sky's highlight show DtR has a side strain. Wouldn't be that hopeful of him playing myself; quick turnaround and likelihood of lots of overs.

Who'd replace on the assumption he is broken?

Exactly, that innings, while match winning, was incredibly streaky. And it seems very likely now that at least some of the 4 (?) dropped catches were intentional.

All things being legitimate, he would have probably got out for his standard 20 or 30 odd runs.

The last time Hussey made a solid century is probably the one before the ashes, way back in India in 2008. And that is back when he was averaging a ridiculous 80 or something.

Point taken

I'm only really saying 'big ticket' because I feel that we're never going to lose to sides like the Windies, Pak or NZ.

However, for mine, our fragile batting as a collective is exposed virtually every time we come up against a team that's up and about - England, SA and India. And it costs us series.

It used to be a big thing when we lost series. Now we just lose regularly to India (last two times if we lose this time) SA (pants pulled down in our own back yard for the first time since 1992/93) and England (two out of the last three times).

We, selectors and supporters, seem to have developed a tolerance for losing.

Looking at the squad it'd have to be George, unless the selectors decide it'd be a good to play Smith and Hauritz together as part of a four man attack, which I severely hope doesn't happen.

The team for my money would be the same as this test, only with Smith in for North (hopefully) and George in for Bolly if he is still injured. Would probably prefer to have Usman in the squad to jump in the middle order, but Smith is a very exciting prospect so have no issues with him getting a run at number 6.

not true. your team is in transition. from a great team, australia has become a competitive team in the last three years because many champion cricketers have retired in quick succession. for the team to regain its top position firmly a few of the current players, or those who make their debuts in the near future, will have to come good. like in the late 1980s, the boons, waughs, mcdermotts and taylors will have to emerge and the ritchies, gilberts, welhams and philipses will have to be filtered out. it will be a long process but there is no way australia can win every series like the golden years. you have to accept these defeats and keep making the team stronger continuously. it is not tolerance; it is rebuilding.

Not to mention that a quality player - and Hussey is a quality international player (a bit over-rated though, tbh) - if you give enough chances, will come good. It's what he's done around that streaky/dubious knock and the one at The Oval which has been the problem. Those knocks aside, he just hasn't looked much like the go-to guy any more.

Big warning bells went off when he was bowled shouldering arms a couple of times in England. Can't be sure but I strongly suspect his eyes just ain't what they used to be.

Yeah and when he started edging everything outside off-stump to the ball that didn't move

That innings against England was pretty sketchy too.
