NZers ordinary in the pool so far. Particularly Burmester - Commonwealth gold in Melbourne in 2006, fourth at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 when he was crook, and out in the heats today. Ouch. That's a decline and a half.

****, that 400m free final was a thriller. Great race.

Opening ceremony was fantastic. Watched a bit of it tonight and thought they did a great job. The stadium looked fantastic and the importance placed on India's rich cultural history was really good. I'm glad they avoided the gimmicky bollywood dancing crap that plagues most of the opening ceremonies of events India holds. It was a job well done in showcasing India's rich cultural heritage to the world. Well done to all the people involved with the opening ceremony.

Australia and Nigeria have already won Gold. India with one silver and one bronze so far. Good start to the Commonwealth Games. The venues are looking fantastic.

I enjoyed the opening ceremony too....
Good to see Jamaica's Alia Atkinson reaching the final of the women's 50m breaststroke. England hammered Barbados 82-20 in netball....

I was so afraid it would turn out to be an IPL opening ceremony. They did a fantastic job though.

For many it is a Symbol of British Imperialism and Colonialism. Personally I don't see a reason why India should be a part of any such Association.
Countries have economic benefits to being members of the Commonwealth. Why else do you think Cameroon and Rwanda, who were not British colonies, applied to become members? And why do you think it's painful for Zimbabwe and Fiji to be suspended from the Commonwealth?

India are benefitting economically from the Commonwealth, otherwise they would've left already. As far as I can make it out, the only former British colonies who are not members of the Commonwealth are Ireland and the US.

Watched some of the under-48kg women's weightlifting last night. Was like a tallest dwarf comp - hardly inspiring.

There is nothing that India gains to stand from Commonwealth apart from some cheap medals at the Commonwealth games which its athletes will never be able to earn at any other international event.

Always find it disappointing when small countries like England and Canada manage to jag a minor medal at the Commonwealth Games.

It's depressing. We should be trifecta-ing everything tbh.

Couple of desperately close fourths for Kiwis overnight. Natalie Wiegersma missed out on bronze by 0.03 seconds. Brutal.
