Love all the usual knockers lining up - so predictable. That said, North is dire and should be dropped. Hughes or Cam White please.

But White has looked like a champ for a while now in ODIs and even T20s. Especially in innings where we've collapsed and needed him to build something.

We are talking about the Australian Test team. It is not the place to be experimenting with young cricketers, and to be providing experience for a potential bunch of talent. Smith is not in the top six batsmen in Australia, and hence should not bat in the top six. The Australian team is not such a basket case that it needs to start afresh.

I hate the idea of nurturing talent at the international level. You either deserve a place, or you wait your turn playing domestic cricket. Smith was fantastic for NSW last year, but he is not the only guy averaging > 50. The ideas being touted above make Australian selection policies sound like Bangladesh, just throw any cricketer with an ounce of talent to the mercy of the international game.
I'm not saying to start afresh... At the moment I think Hussey and North should be replaced (Ponting I will save my verdict until after the ashes). These guys are not scoring runs anyway, so the worse case scenario is nothing will change by testing out some younger players for a while.

Hughes in for North, bat him at six.

The rest just need to man up, but North's not up to it.

Fmd an hour of Haddin there would have been handy, not that Paine has done much wrong mind.

Exactly Issac.

Smith has a better FC record than North, is younger than North, has more scope for improvement than North, hasn't failed miserably like North.

North, not Smith, is the experiment - a failed one.

Hit the stumps yet bails didn't fall off

Was just saying Zaheer should go around the wicket.

I saw Hughes play for Hampshire a few times, when he came over to find some form, he looked hopelessly out of form.
Indeed. I didn't actually see him bat, but judging by his record he was in hopeless form. Couldn't buy a run in any form of the game. Get Steve Smith in TBH.

Hauritz needs to hit some boundaries here....obviously no chance of forcing a draw anymore, and blocking balls is only going to make it more likely a wicket ball will arrive.

Glad my prediction of North failing has finally come true, Nnanden.

Time to bring on the Hughes at 6 even would be better than this disaster. Even Dave Hussey for a last hurrah.

As die hard a West Aussie as I am, North is struggling, he seems to lack sound defensive technique, or at the very least his technique is letting him down now that he's not in good form.

Smith could probably bat 6 but not yet, in time maybe, Ferguson anyone ? No cricket last year though. Voges (another West Aussie :D)

Yeah AWTA on both counts.

It's amazing how social actually manages to come across as biased as condescending to the rest of the cricket world even when he's bagging the team. He acts as if Australia losing is a crime against nature and that it automatically means the team selection was entirely wrong - I mean, how else could Australia possibly play poorly or *gasp* lose game!?

He actually has a point about North this time, but I suppose that's just why it was so predictable.
