Road to the 2011 ODI World Cup

From what i have seen of Napier, i have no idea why he would even be considered for the England set up or why he is being discussed at such length, especially as he has been injured all year. Please, selectors, stick with the matchwinning side we currently have (although if Bresnan keeps bowling turds with the new ball, Shahzad should probably get another go).

As for this 'regularly bowls 90mph' stuff, i always thought he was an early 80s medium-pacer? Did that suddenly change overnight?
Been that way for at least a year. He is very quick nowadays.
Yeah, he has bowled 90mph for a couple years. Understandable, he's supposed to be quite the machine in the gym and was the model for Ian Pont's fast bowling book. Good action + strength kinda means 90mph.

I'm a fan of Napier aswell and have said for a while he should be involved with the national side, at least selected for the 30 best T20 players!

He is a one-day performer, very useful with the new ball nipping it around, and he is late 80's/90 mph quick. His death bowling is also of a high standard, while having the ability to pentrate during the middle overs.

His batting is a bonus, and would be very much hit and miss at the top level, but I'm sure on occasions he'd be able to provide the side with some impetus with his powerful hitting.

I would certainly have included him in some T20 squads, but we are the world champions, so it's difficult to say the selectors didn't get it right by excluding him.

The issue is that, Napier got a stress fracture. He may not be able to bowl as quick and that was really his main asset as an ODI bowler, that he was quick and bowled attacking areas.

Yes absolutely, how he recovers from such an injury is obviously key to him getting selected in international sides in the future, but I don't believe they will select him now even if he gets back to the standard and pace he was at before. At one point, I think I'm right in saying he was the leading T20 wicket-taker in the world, but even that didn't get him into the 30-man squad.

We don't know how he's going to recover from this injury, but fingers crossed he makes a full recovery. I know Essex have missed him in all formats, including the County Championship.

Napier is a hard worker in the gym, so hope he will muster the strength to rebuild his back to how it was before.

Yes. Essex have failed to replace him with the new breed of pace bowlers. Jahid Ahmed has been released, as has Westfield, I believe. Palludino hasn't really done much and Wright always promises a lot but fails to deliver.

Yeah, how dare people discuss a player's potential merits and whether he deserves to go to the World Cup or not!!!
It's not like Napier is English, England will be at the World Cup and this is a World Cup thread.
Don't open the thread if you don't want to read what people have to say, or why not create some discussion yourself, rather than whinge about people posting about something relevant.

Maybe too hard. He's really built now. The extra pounds plus the strain of bowling quicker than before must put fair old strain on his back.

Hope he comes back tho; genuinely good bloke.

haha, well said. ****, I've never had to open a thread like this and read about a player I haven't heard of from any other country, honest.

Okay, Grant Flowers return has me thinking. Which players that played the '96 WC here are going to be back?

Grant Flower
Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya (if picked)
Ricky Ponting

Anyone else?
