A fit and firing Friedel De Wet would be a bonus to any team.

Its a pity that injuries have come at bad moments in his career...almost when things have started to look up for him.

Lets hope we can see him hit the 145 kmph mark and in good areas again soon.
No doubt sir.

Ashwell Prince first centurion of the season (144). 96 N/O for Kuhn in the same game. Warriors were making a fist of it after being rolled out for 89 first innings but look set for a collapse after Smuts, Prince and Jacobs got them to 300 odd for 3.

In Kimberley, Victor Mpitsang took a career best 6 for 30 as the Dolphins were rolled out for 167. Ducks for the Amla brothers.

Whilst in Randjesfontein, perennial big game bottler, VB van Jaarsveld and Zander de Bruyn put the Lions in control but in reply to a 200+ run deficit, Graeme Smith is going like a train and may still save the Cobras. Paul Harris retired hurt in the Lions innings and hasn't bowled in the Cobras second innings...

I read somewhere that that Cobus Pienaar guy focussed on uni studies last year.
I found out last year that he was studying at the Uni in FS called Kovsies and I assumed that was the reason he wasn't playing even amateur cricket for FS.

On that note, Obus recently played in the Club champs and starred for them where he got runs and wickets and they ended up winning the tiurnament.

NMMU from PE were the defending champions and they had a team that included Kelly Smuts, David White (SA U19 2010 WC), Colin Ackermann (SA U19 2010 WC), Corbyn Dolley, Reece Williams and Matthew Kennedy, who all play for the EP amateur team and were big favourites.

The highlight for NMMU was David White, who was named player of the tournament with 270 runs at 90 a piece. His reward was a FC debut for EP amateur team where scored 49 (52) and is currently 26*. In the same game Parnell got some overs under his belt...15 overs 2-34.

White looked good in the U19 WC along with Hendricks of Gauteng/Lions. Ackerman was a big disappointment mind.

Philander pinned him on the elbow after Harry slogged him over extra-cover. It could have been interesting 2 watch that.

VB van Jaarsveld must be forgotten. All the talent in the world but has no brain and like you say, can't deal with the big game atmosphere. Its a pity because he is a rare talent. But as I've always said with him...his negatives outweigh his positives.

Indeed. Given a good opportunity by RSA in Aus, was even inline to play the 3rd test at Sydney for Graeme Smith who was carrying an injury but in the following 20/20 and ODI games, he simply looked all at sea. Failed miserably in the Champions League as well where only Virus, Vandiar and Neil Mac showed any big game mentality.

I agree mate...those 2 were probably the best of the lot.

Ackermann flattered to deceive with his big reputation before the tournament.

Yeah, Alviro really has matured as a cricketer and is a delight to watch. I am shocked with how he has improved. He has good competition for his test place as well with Rudolph and Elgar. But back to your point, those 3 were the batsman in the Lions team with a sense of big game mentality, thats for sure.

I think I read somwhere that you're also a bit dodgy about Ingram. I have to a agree with you as well. The jury is still out on him. But my bet is that Boucher or Kemp will replace him in the ODI squad for the WC. I don't think Elgar or Rossouw will get a call-up yet unless they ahve an amazing limited overs season.

Theres always a fine line between being a very good domestic player and then succeeding internationally. Elgar, Miller, Vandiar and Rossouw give me a sense of having a big match mentality and theres a good chance of them succeeding internationally down the line.

Not big on Ingram simply because he hasn't done anything in the 4 day game or indeed played many good knocks against international standard attacks. Miller too hasn't done that yet but he looks the part, Ingram doesn't. Elgar's runs against Sri Lanka and Pak A for my mind far outweigh anything Ingram did domestically last year or in Bangladesh as the WC will be head in the subcontinent and Elgar was facing good spin heavy attacks and made runs. Ingram needs to move on from being an onside slogger.

Can't agree more...that is exactly my problem with Ingram as well...can't score runs in 4-day cricket. I'm not all for this limited overs specialists.

Sure, you can be a limited overs specialist internationally but on the domestic scene you should be scoring runs on the 4-day scene as well for me, not only the 1-day scene.

Then yours and my theory goes out the window for Miller. But like you say, sometimes every so often you come across a player who just looks the goods and thats my opinion of Miller.

I watched both Ingram and Millier last year who were the stand-out limited overs batsman...but Miller was the one to stand out for me and the SA selectors agreed as he was picked 1st. Also, younger players like Miller and Vandiar...their averages in FC cricket don't tell the true story...they will get better because they both debuted in franchise cricket at 18 and 17 respectively.

seamup, I used to read you in SS forum. I'm just curious when did your opinions on Virus and Elgar change? I remember you being critical of the selectors when they picked Virus.

My opinion of Dean Elgar has never changed. I have followed his career since 2005 when he was named in the SA Schools team that he captained and subsequently the SA U19 team that he captained. I have been a big backer of his and will continue to be one. Eventhough there is Petersen and Rudolph around...Elgar will get his chance whenever that may be. I see a bit of Gary Kirsten's grit in him and as we know, you need to have grit to open in South Africa. I have also made no bones about it, that I think he will be a future test captain for South Africa. He has probably the best cricket brain out of all the youngsters coming through.

I was always never been a big fan of Virus. In his younger days he would get pretty 20's or 30's and hence him being dropped from Titans and having to move to the Lions. You could also predict thet he would throw his wicket away with a silly shot or fall over and get trapped LBW. But obviously he has worked hard in the last 3 years on his technique and attitude. Just watch when he plays the flick through square-leg or mid-wicket and the concious effort he makes to not fall over and how he watches the ball right on to the bat. I respect what he has done ito improving his game and he has earned my respect. Probably the defining moment when he made me take notice of his improvement was the 3 one-day fifties in a row against England in a position he isn't accustomed to and then finally the 100 against India at Eden Gardens.

Good hit out for Graeme Smith before the Zim and Pak series. Nigh on run a ball double ton and nearly an unlikely victory for the Cobras.

Dolphins beaten by the Knights in Kimberley. Hash fell to McLaren both innings for 0. Ridiculous second innings match figures for McLaren (5 for 35 off 24) and Victor Mpitsang, who finished the match with match figures of 38 overs, 6 for 61…

Whilst the Titans smashed the Warriors at Centurion.

McLaren called into the 20/20 side for the games against Zim for the injured Albie Morkel.
