I can't really say because I don't get to see what's available. I just expect there's a better alternative to playing a 35-year-old all-rounder as a specialist batsman when he isn't looking like scoring many runs anyway. I mean, they're playing an in-form John Mooney at 8 as a specialist batsman, so there's no way Botha should be batting anywhere near as high as he is. And if he was being picked as a specialist batsman at 8 you would have no argument that he deserves his place.

But he can bowl at the moment so all of this is moot :p.

I certainly wouldn't be batting him as high as they have been, but I'd probably still pick him even if he couldn't bowl at the moment.

Ireland's always a funny team to pick because so many of their players are allrounders and they all bat and bowl to a remarkably similar standard. The two wicket keepers and Porterfield can't bowl while Rankin and Dockrell are mugs, but the rest is all very form-based. You can find yourself batting four and opening the bowling in one series, then batting eight without bowling at all two or three series with it all being perfectly justifiable.

Dunno. Look at the line-up that played against Zimbabwe - who would you pick instead? Keeping in mind that Cusack is injured.
Hope Andre's just keeping the seat warm for Ed's return. Simmons, like Birrell hasn't been one to discard players immediately just because they're out of nick so I say he'll be around for a while longer. It's a policy that's strangely worked in our favour with the likes of White, Mooney and Wilson. I see Cusack in the same spot as White 12 months ago. His batting wasn't outstanding this season, but his medium pacers in the shorter form of the game are handy.

From all reports, James Shannon is someone I’d keep an eye on after the WC.

Ahhh no. Never liked him, ever since I sledged him back when we were playing club cricket against his school team and he had longish hair which stuck out the sides of his cap over his ears. I dubbed him Princess Leia.

But he is just so... gun. Can't hit a thing and then whacks it out of the park and bowls dibbly dobbly balls.
