Don't you guys have laws against this kind of stuff? Or you do, but they're token, just like North Korea holding elections.
What law, The whole country engages in this sort of act. Yes you heard it right, entire frigging country, entire population of 1 Billion minus the children is responsible for this.

It is a heartbreaking sight but better this than begging on the streets or getting into crime/drugs etc. :(

I don't believe there is any study that has ever suggested that, without these jobs, these children will end up begging or doing crime/drugs.

Quite frankly, child labour is an accepted part of our culture/society. I know many people (heck everyone does it in the town I grew up in) who reach out to poor folks and bring their little children to their home to do their household work. This is an inhumane practice, which has been going on for ever in India and I do not see it ending anytime soon, because we do not see anything wrong with it.

I read somewhere they earn $1.50 an hour (IIRC), either that, it's $1.50 per day.
Per day more likely. $1.50 is around 60-65rs. I highly doubt the wages for the kids are that 'high' per hour.

It's sad how India wastes millions on unnecessary things like the games and closes both eyes when it comes to issues such as child labour.

Is this weekend work, or are they doing it and not going to school full stop?

Is 60-65rs a 'lot' of money or not? Could you actually buy anything with that sort of money?

Oh yeah, after they finish this weekend job, their chauffeur is going to come pick them up in a Bentley and whisk them off to school, via the toy store to pick up a new Playstation 3.

If you check out that statistics link above, there are a number of people surviving on <$2 a day.

And no, most of these kids don't get educated, sometimes their income is too significant for their families to allow schooling. Read somewhere that they average 30% of the households income.

No unfortunately it isn't. If I remember correctly from when I was there on holidays earlier in the year, a box of Corn Flakes costs around 150rs and bread is around 15-20rs depending on type so it would be very difficult to live off of 60-65rs a day.

Rumoured threats from Al Qaeda against citizens of countries involved in the war in Afghanistan.

"Security experts say there shouldn't be any overt shows of patriotism in India."

But isn't overt patriotism what the medal ceremonies are all about?

They are going to keep out on the down low this year, instead of national anthems being put on speakers they'll put an Ipod cheap mp3 player on the victorious athlete.

It's a good tactic by India to chase off athletes in hope of salvaging a few medals for our own
