My next selection is somewhat tactical - at this rate I probably would leave him out of my best XI but I still need a spinner and am hopeful that by the time of my next selection we'll be in an era I was looking at to grab one of the spin bowlers I had in mind. So I'll pick Eddie Paynter, who averaged 59 in 20 tests, and would play him if we do a simulation after the draft. ;)

My previous contribution, about the importance of taking 20 wickets, got some conversation going, so I'll try again, with what we could call, for convenience sake, the nick-o index.

Imagine your team bowls first, then you bat, then you bowl again. It's easy to work out how many runs your team can score in one innings; equally, it's easy to work out how many runs you will concede in taking 20 wickets. [well, not so easy if your team can't take 20 wickets, but even then you can work out how many wickets you are able to take, how much they cost per wicket, and do the maths]

What's left is a simple A minus B calculation, to see how many runs you need to score in the last innings to win the match.

That's the nick-o index. The lower the figure, the more likely you are to win.

For example, Blakus after 11 picks, can take 20 wickets-per-match at a cost of 440 runs. His batting lineup is set to score 379 per innings. Thus 440 minus 379 equals 62 to win. Simple.

So, here we go so far:

Shri: 178 to win
Somerset: 72 to win
NUFAN: 41 to win
Blakus: 62 to win

I think you take 20 wickets for 456. [Faulkner 3 @ 26.58; O'Reilly 5 @ 22.59; Ironmonger 5 @ 17.97; Hughes 4 @ 28.38; and Marshall 4 @ 20,94 comes to 21 for 479, averages down to 456]

And score 362 per innings -- is that about right?

So with a batsman to spare, you are nick-o index 94. A decent batsman will get you down to around 50 or so... Good team.

Please remember this everyone when you are picking teams at the end of the competition. :ph34r:

Honestly though, I'm fairly surprised to be leading something like this (although it's not that big a deal to chase 41 compared with 62) as pretty much the entire rounds so far I haven't had an absolutely obvious selection of an all time great apart from Greg Chappell really.

According to my very rough Calculations my Bowling attack is taking 20 wickets for 407 .

And My batting Attack is scoring 297 at the moment .So ought to be something like 70 i think on THE nick-o-index by the time of the 11th pick.Can change maybe with the 12th pick.
The batting averages of Grace,Rhodes and Peel are letting me down .

Some very crude statistical analysis going on. As cricket fans surely we can look at two separate bowling attacks and determine the strongest attack without looking at raw stats?

I agree but this is fun part and this is the main thing which determines the result of the game... [ test maches ]
