Murray serving better than Nadal. More first serve percentage, faster, better placement.

World is going mad. Fair enough if he's returning better, but by God he's played better in every aspect of the game in that first set.

6-3 Murray.

Let's see what Rafa has got in the 2nd.

This is depressing :(

Come on Rafa, break back!

Haven't seen Murray this good since the Australian Open.

Murray too good there.

nadal at 4-3 and having Murray 15-40 on serve should have taken that 2nd set. Then broken next game and it's all she wrote.

that berdych is competitive against federer is a testament to how much federer has declined...if federer plays just about adequately, he will always beat the berdychs of this world...
I don't think that's fair to either Federer or Berdych. Federer is still playing at a relatively high level and Berdych is a top 10 player in the world right now. Your comments don't seem reflective of 2010 at all.

They're not.

If Federer isn't winning every match he plays then tennis sucks and is in a poor state, according to Anil.

Federer is nowhere close to his prime/peak though. You can see it in his footspeed and racquet-head speed. I've been following his career since 2004 (watching nearly every match of his) so I can see where Anil is coming from. It's the natural order of things as tennis players approach 30.

Honest question. Men's tennis circa 2003/04 vs. tennis 2009/10.

Which 18 months to 2 years had higher quality tennis and was more entertaining?

Jono - received your message. :)

About your question, it's hard to compare, isn't it? I don't think the average quality of tennis varies much between eras (actually holds for pretty much any sport) but the athleticism levels go up, advances in technology and surfaces have changed the game and tilted it in favour of baseliners IMO.

Standard of men's tennis has been very good with excellent depth for at least 15-20 years with the possible exception of clay where Rafa is a standout today

Simply talking about Wimbledon, the surface was slower this year and the quality of serve/volleying is pretty poor these days

Reckon Sampras/Rafter/Ivanesivic would've beaten all this year's Wimbledon semi-finalists easily if the matches had been played circa 1998-2000

As for the other tourneys, conditions/technology/athleticism is not really any different so it's all a matter of opinion

No, there are no events on carpet these days (used to be a very quick, low bouncing surface favourable for serve & volley), more slowish, top-spinny HCs, slower balls (I suspect). The strings make it possible to hit freakish passing shots from defensive positions. The technology has made it possible for defensive players to thrive and there doesn't seem to be too many young players aiming to play a classical single-handed BH/serve and volley type game.

Naturally, the standard of volleying has dropped dramatically with players hardly coming to the net, Martina would school most of the best volleyers in the ATP these days. Federer is one of the best out there and he's not exactly a great volleyer, he isn't anywhere near as good as he was at the start of his career. There aren't many others.. Stepanek? Mahut? Dent? Scraping the barrel TBH.

Fed is so mentally weak sometimes nowadays.

At 5-5, after breaking Murray when he served for the set, Fed just played the most ******** game ever.
