Sachin bowling+fielding+leadership > Ponting bowling+fielding+leadership
Goodness me no. Ponting isn't a stellar captain but Sachin wasn't flash either. And Ponting is one of the finest fielders of his generation. So that leaves only Sachin's bowling, woo...

Guys, there already exists a thread for Tendulkar vs Ponting discussion. Funnily enough, it's the one called 'Tendulkar vs Ponting,' and it's definitely not this one. Any more posts on that topic will be moved there.

Whatever it takes!!!
The only reason Murali is not in level 1 is because I had to limit the list to 10 names. He is just as great a cricketer as all those guys and is on their 'level', not a level below but the same level. But I could only name 10 players, and that is what I went with.

The only players I was willing to swap with Murali in level 1 were the bottom 4 (McGrath, Sachin, Lara and Marshall). Now if I remove any of those, I get the same whinging. But it's not because I don't think they're as good, but simply because I could only list 10 names and I decided, at that moment, to list those names. In retrospect, I should probably have Marshall higher up - as he was probably the best all-round cricketer of the others - above McGrath, Sachin and Lara and it's a toss-up between those 3 and Murali.

EDIT: TBF, the more I look at it the more I think Kallis should be there for either Sachin or Lara. He simply was the better cricketer of those 3. The only reason Ponting is as high up as he is, is for his incredible fielding and leadership, otherwise he would be below Kallis too.
lol, Ikki.. I wont disagree with this coz it is YOUR list and your opinion but there is no way in hell Ponting deserves to be that high for his captaincy alone. It is obvious that he is a mediocre captain at best and it has been shown up time and again...... He is really just the same as Sachin or Lara as captains, IMO, and he just has great results because he had such an outstanding team to lead... And he still lost an Ashes with the best Aussie team since the invincibles..

Ponting has been applauded for his captaincy skills many times in the com-box in live matches, like from good bowling changes to field changes. It is just that people only remember the negatives about his captaincy.

So have Lara and Sachin.. The point is, the better captains tend to be remembered for the good stuff they did as captains.. Ricky is not.. Soz...

Ponting handled the Australian team after the retirement of top quality players just the same as Lara, umm OK.

Think everyone is a little harsh on Rickys captaincy .

His main mistake seems to be his obsession with batting first.

Ponting has been a great captain for Australia, lead the team extremely well and has maintained exceptionaly high standards within the Australian team, thats if you listen to the people he has captained and people involved with the Australian cricket team. Justin Langer gave an interview on ABC radio and explained how important Ponting has been and still is to the Australian team, incredible stuff especially how he trains longer than any other player. and then spends time in the nets with any new squad members.

NOt really.. I think he is WAY too defensive (of course, seems the modern trend) and this he was even when he captained the 2nd greatest Aussie side ever... And he does not always hit me as the brightest chap around in terms of bowling changes, backing people and seeing them deliver.. Sorry, he doesn't seem in the same league as some of the better captains I have seen... blokes like Ranatunga, Ganguly even.. Quite enjoyed Cronje's captaincy before the nonsense of 98 and 99... And Martin Crowe I felt was under rated as a captain. Jayawardene is another who is great IMO.. Fleming, I don't think is as great as many here make it out to be but he was still good and easily better than Ponting... Steve Waugh always stuck me as a good captain.. Taylor, far and away the best I have seen from Australia... You can easily see where Ponting lags as a captain. The Bangalore test and then the last test when they were in India, the Ashes this year where I felt many times he was on the backfoot earlier than necessary... I am not bringing him down here.. I just think there is a real reason for Murali > Ponting and no I do not subscribe to the nonsense that Bowlers > Batsmen..

Want interviews of players telling how good a captain Sachin/Lara was? Of course, your team mate will say you are great captain unless you are captaining a revolting side like the Windies and Pakistan of recent times..
