Going by your logic, Tendulkar had even ****tier team particularly in 99. The team consisted of stalwarts like Debang Gandhi, Kanitkar, MSK Prasad, Prasad etc.

Ponting has had more than 3 years since Warne/McG's departure, there is no excuse in "we are rebuilding" phrase anymore imho.

Ricky chasing Tendu's records will soon turn into a joke unless Ponting regains peak form and Sachin starts to play like a human being. Otherwise his Godliness is going to take the aggregate and tally of hundreds beyond Ponting's reach.

While I am happy that Tendulkar is getting beyond the reach of Ponting, I wouldn't say that the last 3 years have cruelly exposed Ponting. You are guilty of the same fault as Ian Chappel here. Ponting is a very good batsman and is among the best in his era. These last 3 years do not detract from that and the same with Dravid too.

That is incredibly unfair I think. I agree with crux.

You can't judge a player's entire career on their peak, but you most certainly do not on their trough when they're nearing the end of their career!

Ponting is a champion. I don't think he has a chance in hell of passing Tendulkar, and I said this back in 2006 even when Sachin was in bad form (when people didn't think Tendulkar would pass Lara). It is obvious that age affects all batsman, and people seemed to not realise that age (and the fact Ponting does rely on his eye a fair bit) would come to affect him as his career went on.

But it doesn't take away from his feats pre-2007 at all.

I wouldn't write off Ponting or Kallis's chances of passing Tendulkar at this stage. Maybe even an outsider like Jayawardene, Sangakkara or Smith might end up surprising us all.

How does it 'expose' Ponting if it actually is misleading?

I wouldn't write off Ponting or Kallis's chances of passing Tendulkar at this stage. Maybe even an outsider like Jayawardene, Sangakkara or Smith might end up surprising us all.

Sehwag said he'd probably retire when he reached 100 tests or something.

He reminds me a lot of Viv tbh. Will play until he doesn't want to anymore, and will rely heavily on his natural talent and hand-eye coordination, so as he ages he won't be nearly as effective as he is now.

Well during lurking, when I see the Cricket Chat icon light up with a new post, I get all excited because I'm thinking it's a thrilling discussion of the Tri Series, or maybe the up coming World Cup, or something else, but alas it's a pointless thread, one that I'm tiring of seeing.

of course, it doesn't tarnish his stellar achievements. but the last three years have firmed up their respective positions in cricketing history even more.
tendy continues to be in level 1; ricky stuck in level 2.

india reaching the no.1 position in test cricket and ricky's team sliding to no.4 are also closely connected to their performances with the bat.

if sachin does manage to put the records beyond ricky's reach, then graeme smith is the only who could even come close to scoring 15000 runs 50 centuries; sanga has a very distant shot too. looking into the mirror, not the cracked one ian chappell used, i predict these final figures.

sachin 15.5K runs - 52 hundreds.
ricky 14.5k runs - 47 hundreds
smith 14k runs - 38 hundreds
sanga - 13k runs - 35 hundreds
