Thank god! Back to mid 70s atleast...I'll open it up a little.

Sunil Gavaskar's favorite batsman must never be a bad pick...It's quite interesting to note that, as a player, Gavaskar seemed too concerned about his stats. But his favorite batsmen seldom had flashy stats (barring Sachin and Sobers).I'll open it up a little.

Very very good pick Somerset!Although I've the option of waiting for a modern-day wicket-keeper batsman, I intended to select a traditional keeper so I'll stick to that objective and select Godfrey Evans.

Somerset XI:
Sachin Tendulkar
K.S.Ranjitsinhji
Billy Bates
Godfrey Evans
Dennis Lillee
Nice. I actually had the option of picking Evans instead of Compton. I had a read around some of the wicketkeeper threads on CW, and there seems to be very little mention of him, contrary to the impression created by cricinfo and wikipedia. Is it one of those "Out of sight, out of mind" things here?Although I've the option of waiting for a modern-day wicket-keeper batsman, I intended to select a traditional keeper so I'll stick to that objective and select Godfrey Evans.

Late 50s!Ah, back to the 50's lol..
Its the stats which puts him behind others... 220 / 230 dismissals in 90+ games is not that good but from what I had read about him - he was pretty good! Just like Syed Kirmani, whose stats does not do him justice.Nice. I actually had the option of picking Evans instead of Compton. So you found your opener!
I think with the wicket-keeper batsmen coming through in recent times the keepers of past eras have been somewhat shelved in discussions. Averages seem to play such a part in determining the merit of players in past eras that those like Evans, Blackham, Tallon, etc. (great keepers who all averaged in the teens or low 20s) haven't been popular choices for these drafts though the better batsmen (and comparably inferior wicket keepers) are selected.Nice.
