Although I've the option of waiting for a modern-day wicket-keeper batsman, I intended to select a traditional keeper so I'll stick to that objective and select Godfrey Evans.

1st Test: England v West Indies at Birmingham, May 30-Jun 4, 1957 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

Somerset XI:
Sachin Tendulkar
K.S.Ranjitsinhji
Billy Bates
Godfrey Evans
Dennis Lillee
Very very good pick Somerset!

I too considered him before picking Cowdrey but then I had other keepers in mind as well...

Nice. I actually had the option of picking Evans instead of Compton. I had a read around some of the wicketkeeper threads on CW, and there seems to be very little mention of him, contrary to the impression created by cricinfo and wikipedia. Is it one of those "Out of sight, out of mind" things here?

Not sure how to balance my bowling attack. Dev has never bowled first change in his career. So he can open with Waqar, I guess. Though Worrell did so much better with the ball opening than anywhere else.
But he's not exactly alltime-draft class as an opening bowler  Nor can he be first change really.

So : Waqar, Dev, ??, Laker, Worrell

With first change batting 9 I guess? Hmmm.

Its the stats which puts him behind others... 220 / 230 dismissals in 90+ games is not that good but from what I had read about him - he was pretty good! Just like Syed Kirmani, whose stats does not do him justice.

I think with the wicket-keeper batsmen coming through in recent times the keepers of past eras have been somewhat shelved in discussions. Averages seem to play such a part in determining the merit of players in past eras that those like Evans, Blackham, Tallon, etc. (great keepers who all averaged in the teens or low 20s) haven't been popular choices for these drafts though the better batsmen (and comparably inferior wicket keepers) are selected.
