Why should I give the guy a chance when there's a good opportunity for hyperbole and OTT hand wringing? Either way though, it's a decision in the best interests of the player himself and not in the best interests of the team. He's hardly the first player to have significant body issues at his age.
Don't agree with this - if he thinks that he can become some gun test opener for us and he can actually do it - I would much rather have that for the next few years than a guy whose gonna get so sick of playing with sore knees and back that he becomes a limited over specialist in the next year. I think someone like Oram was a lot more selfish personally - when his body started breaking down the way it did, HE should have said "You know what, I have proved that I am good enough to be a number 5 or 6 batsman if that's what I worked on", but instead he kept bowling, and had to retire from tests at 31. Someone like Styris who decided to not play test cricket when we needed him to be around that top order was not in team interests.

Na mate he does, its just he keeps coming back to the team at 80% fitness, this is his first comeback at 100% in years.
I think he's more likely to succeed simply because he will be more comfortable against pace than spin.If he gets owned he sucks and if he succeeds he's a flat track bully.
