McCullum Gives Up Keeping in Tests

Clearly the 48 hour flight addled your brain. Why on earth does his decision to give his body a rest from keeping - ya know, the same body that is having some surgery on it in the next month after he's been playing with said issues since age 19 - mean he thinks he's bigger than the NZ team? He's already said he's aware he'll have to fight for his spot - give the guy a ****ing chance.
Why should I give the guy a chance when there's a good opportunity for hyperbole and OTT hand wringing? Either way though, it's a decision in the best interests of the player himself and not in the best interests of the team. He's hardly the first player to have significant body issues at his age.

Don't agree with this - if he thinks that he can become some gun test opener for us and he can actually do it - I would much rather have that for the next few years than a guy whose gonna get so sick of playing with sore knees and back that he becomes a limited over specialist in the next year. I think someone like Oram was a lot more selfish personally - when his body started breaking down the way it did, HE should have said "You know what, I have proved that I am good enough to be a number 5 or 6 batsman if that's what I worked on", but instead he kept bowling, and had to retire from tests at 31. Someone like Styris who decided to not play test cricket when we needed him to be around that top order was not in team interests.

Not Terrible
Potentially a blessing in disguise considering that India's pace bowlers are almost as dire as Bangladeshs.

Does anyone actually think it is for the good of the team?

I think a lot of people think it will detrimental to the team - but I think if he does well opening then it will be good for the team. If not - BAD for the team.

But I think he deserves the chance - it is down to injury concerns, not just cos he thinks he is better than everyone else.

It means ****ing Hopkins will have to play though. fmd an average opener > Hopkins. Especially considering it is extremely long odds that McCullum will average > 40 with the bat at the top.

****ing Hopkins ind33d.
It sucks that he gets to suckle from the teet of a central contract again, I hope this doesn't mean he's locked in for the next year no matter his performances.

It's also a shame McGlashan never got the chance to show if he could back up his 50 against India. He looked more confident and tidy behind the stumps in his short stint than Hopkins has.

AWTA - I think Hopkins picked more off his batting than anything else.

What's the go with picking terrible keepers in NZ. How was Hart ever ahead of zNevin, for instance?
Because he was actually a better keeper than Nevin.

Plus, once Nevin failed as an opener in an ODI series against Sth Africa, how could they ever pick him again...
