*Official* Australia vs Pakistan in England

International Coach
Only Dougeh looks any likely to give Indians jitters in that lineup. Hilfenhaus might be useful in the first half hour of the day. Mitchell would be horrendous as he was last time around, and the spinners meat and drink for the Indian belly. I say bring back Tait as his express pace might trouble them.
Ryan Harris will be handy...get him fit!

North has to go after this series, who cares what he did with the ball, his batting simply cannot be relied upon. Not sure Smith is the answer just yet either, but ultimately whoever would replace North would be in a similar situation (i.e. still quite inexperienced).

So gutted about Johnsons dire efforts this series, guess he just can't adapt to the conditions properly. Without checking stats guru I'm guessing his home & away bowling would be a stark contrast.

Would take

Hughes
Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Hauritz
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

myself.
I'd do something similar plus make Katich captain and hope Harris and Siddle are available as back-up

Tbh, I think that the chances of Ponting stepping down are roughly equivalent to him dropping down the order and Katich being appointed leader i.e. zero

However, should Oz lose this test, the fact remains that he has not won a series in Eng despite being favourites in every one, 2 of his decisions at the toss in those series were monumental blunders that led to losses and, most importantly, the team is treading water

Time to go, I'm afraid

Why would you make a guy captain for only two years? Because that's how long I think Katich will be playing...

He's got the best brain and 2-3 years is 30 tests

Anyway, appoint Clarke if need be but Ricky has to go

Agreed that Ricky's time is fast running out, but goddamn there'll be a bloody uproar.

I mean, it's not just that his technique is becoming less and less solid. It's that he's playing bloody ludicrous shots.

^ It happens with age mate..it happens with age..On day 2, I saw him trying to pull a Asif delivery, the famous Ponting pull shot, something he has made his own, and miiss it completley only to be hit on the belly..
It happens with age..ur reflexes are slower, ur reactions are slower, your muscles dont move as fast.

Don't think age has anything to do with his 2nd innings dismissal. It was just a **** shot.

Reckon it'd be about 25 at home and 35 away tbh. It's so frustrating.

how does this strategy sounds for pakistan to get that 40 runs..

after the fall of a wicket

they should send Aamir to go at it.. he should play possitve and attack.. in case Aamir is fails.. send another tailender..have these tailenders play positive and attacking cricket while one soild batsman in the other side keeping one end.. if these tailenders couldn' get that 40 runs.. at least they could get them closer to that target in my opinion..

Haha, what? Why play around with the batting order? Sending in a tailender under pressure will just make more wickets fall. It's only 40 runs, FFS, and you've got 7 wickets in hand.

Please don't sack Ponting yet, we'd prefer it if he hung on until the end of the Ashes and then resign when you lose.

On the batting front, is there much chance for anyone outside the team to push themselves forward before November? That's the problem at the moment, it's out of season so you don't really know who to put in.

I don't know who precisely aside from Smith and Khawaja, but geez we gotta drop North pronto. That will solve no end of troubles as having two middle order batsmen who are in form makes for much easier reading... and viewing.

Australia struggle in England and this is the best place for Pakistan to have played them. I still think Australia will win back the Ashes this year.

A couple playing county cricket. I'm thinking Rogers mainly. I'm completely convinced that Chris Rogers should be opening the batting for Australia at this point.

Katich, Rogers, Watson, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey.. just looks so much stronger to me.

I know, but the selectors are obsessed with Hughes so it'll be Hughes (he's injured ATM isn't he?)

Yeah, definitely. Australia just struggle greatly in swinging conditions; it's time to face that fact. I'm not just saying that they struggle against high quality swing bowling because every team does - I'm saying they really come back down to the pack a lot in such conditions and that other teams teams are much better equipped.

It's not just the batting either (they all prefer the back foot and commit to shots early which obviously isn't a great thing when it's swinging late) but the bowling too - the likes of Johnson and Bollinger are up right up there in the top five bowlers in the world on flat pitches where you need to bowl with pace, aggression and fitness but they fail to take proper advantage of favourable conditions and end up with similar figures regardless of what the ball is doing. Johnson simply doesn't have the skill level in his bowling - I'm not saying he isn't effective or talented but "skilled" isn't a word I'd ever associate with the way he bowls if you look at his technique, wrist position, general ability to set a batsman up etc. Bollinger can bowl absolute jaffers regardless of the conditions and unlike Johnson is a genuinely skilled bowler, but when the conditions are favourable for bowling he's just not consistent enough to match the returns of skilled opposition bowlers. Siddle's much the same - he's aggressive and fast and can bowl long spells but he doesn't have the skill in terms of movement that Asif, Aamer, Steyn, Anderson, Broad, Zaheer etc do. I'd look at picking a completely different bowling attack in England but of course you'll get the "your best bowlers are your best bowlers and should be able to adapt" brigade that fail to see when there's not much between two bowlers it actually is okay to select based on the conditions - shock horror.

It'll be an entirely different ball-game in Australia though. This is what people forget when they talk down this team a bit - it will still take a very, very special effort to beat them in their own backyard as their players are very well suited to flat, bouncy pitches. I think England are going to find it a real challenge, again.
