I imagine the pecking order's something like this:

First XI: Bollinger, Harris, Johnson, Hauritz, Hopes (and Watto)
Second XI: Lee, Hilfenhaus, McKay, Smith
Third XI: .. erm.. Tait, Bracken, Hazelwood and Hollard or something?

So basically, one player was missing from Australia's first-choice six-man bowling attack, and he was replaced by a young bloke to give him some exposure. One player hardly makes a whole attack "third string" though; it's a gross exaggeration.

Being serious if that is the first choice attack it may struggle in the world cup.Lacked penetration today and the pace bowlers will struggle even more on the batting paradises in Asia.

Not that we are in a much better place like,just before a convict jumps in.

How close are Tait & Nannes to getting a go?

Can see why Hazlewood has been brought along if he's thought of as one for future (the "new McGrath" label sounds a millstone if ever there was one tho), but given how well both bowled in the WC I'm a little surprised at least one of them isn't in the squad at least.

Comes down to who is fit and where the game is played

My gut feel for the WC in India next year is that we'll see a decidedly different attack to what we saw tonight

Yeah probably. Really don't see him being at all likely to get a game ahead of those I named and even a few others, but if Australia were in a World Cup and their first eight choice bowlers went down he'd probably get a call-up ahead of them.

Reckon Johnson's faster than Harris and Nannes when he's in rhythm. Actually think he's faster than Lee too these days even when Lee is "fully fit".

Would certainly be right up there, yeah. The 91 Windies attack of Patterson, Ambrose, Walsh & Marshall was the one that immediately came to my mind as another possible contender.

The late, great Mr Marshall was towards the end of his illustrious career then, obv, but wager he was still sharp enough.

Well, they've barely played, a lot of the bowlers. Bit of a stretch imo to say that they'll struggle in the subcontinent WC based on one ODI in England vs a World XI.

Didn't see England's innings at all tbh, timezones being the eternal enemy, but is sounds as though Morgan really played well.

Went to bed when Ponting was on about 20, safe in the knowledge that he'd played that orgasmic back foot cover drive. Seeing shots like that makes me realise how much I miss cricket when it's not on TV that much.

Harsh to criticise a chap who's scored 87 off 97 but it was a typical middle period Clarke sort of innings tho; looked very solid and scored at a decent enough pace, but didn't seem to really be able to turn the throttle when it came to the last few overs. Doogie Hauritz actually ouscored him quite comfortably in the batting power play taken right at the end.

Cheers mate. Interesting that with the vast improvement in his test technique, he seems to have completely lost the knack of going berko in LO stuff.

Not complaining mind, in that if he has to be good at one, would prefer the longer version of course.

Mind you, the fact he's basically struggled to innovate at all in ODIs for a few years now would, you think, give the selectors an idea he may not be the one to lead the team in T20s, where innovation and risk is King.

Yeah, seems pretty random. I suppose there's a lot of one day cricket between now and then so McKay, Johnson and Hilfenhaus will all get a workout before then anwyay, but still.

Haha @ Clarke. Batting out the innings from 4 after coming in before the 15th without getting a ton? This is a perfect example, really, of why those who defend his recent ODI knocks miss the point; all build-up and no pay-off. A player like Symonds would have taken that score past 300 because it was set-up really well. Hit out or get out.

Some positives for both sides to come out of the match, though. Big, big day for Hazlewood and loving Harris' bowling right now. Awesome stuff. Eoin Morgan's probably already England's best OD bat too.

Dire, Morgan quite the ODI player tho it seems.

There's no way this is our 3rd string attack either, Johnson for Hazelwood is pretty much the only change that would be made for it to be our first choice.

Great! England continuing to own Australia and now they seem to have taken that into all formats. Morgan is such a talented youngster and I hope he will emulate Dhoni who has been pillor of Indian ODI success in recent years. (of course apart from Sachin). Great innings under pressure and this is akin to Peitersen's effort in 2005.

I said before Clarke played an important innings from England pov.
