*Official* Bangladesh in England

As did I. Typical of the character of the guy, I imagine, that he can't stick to one thing.

Oh, and welcome back Jamee. I presumed you were dead.
I remember someone posting a glowing article on here that made it sound like he batted like Richards and bowled like Warne. After 50+ games his record is more like bat like Warne and bowl like Richards

Well that was a good day for England even if it wasn't the most interesting days test cricket we will ever watch.Trott was superb, doesn't matter that the attack was weak and unthreatening he played beautifully all day and he deserves a double ton in the morning.

I'd hope that Morgan once he passes 50 will step it up a little and then if wickets go down Prior and Bresnan will just have licence to play shots from the word go,no point mentioning Swann as he plays shots no matter what the situation.

Get to 550,possibly 600 and declare and see how their batting does in alien conditions. We'll probably end up having to bat again now as we only have the 4 bowlers so won't want to enforce the follow on to give them a rest.8-)

Just saw that Shakib elected to bowl first. Wow.
With the overhead conditions in the morning and the Bangladeshi's struggles with the bat so far on tour, batting first against a bowling line up with James Anderson in it would have been stupid.

Probably too scared of being 40-4 early on.

I think the only way they can compete though is to bat first as that is their strength and if they do get scores over 300 on the board then the opposition have to spend a couple of sessions being sensible when they bat as they have to make sure they don't get in a hole.Today after an hour all the pressure was off and England scored freely all day knowing the pressure wasn't going to be kept on them.

I'm one of his harshest critics, but Lords in May under overcast skies...anything else would've smacked of funk and/or not trusting his seamers.

So England being 362/4 is a good thing?!

Better than being 50/5 at lunch.

Can at least hope now they will have some decent weather and that Tamim might be able to provide a counter attack

Well, obviously not, no. But if he didn't bowl first it would've really just been running the white flag up.

Although, from what I've seen, his field positioning hasn't improved much since our tour; still tends towards the damage limitation so maybe he might as well have batted anyway.

Anyway, just seen the Cook LBW. Have to say it did look pretty out to me in real time. Def didn't look to be heading over as high as hawkeye reckoned anyway.

No, but that's down to his bowlers largely being rubbish. Bowling first under overcast skies with the ball doing a bit through the air and off the pitch was clearly the correct call.

Had England bowled first, I'd have fancied 4 or 5 wickets to have gone down in the morning session.

I think in real time it looked a close shout, but if you watch the opening half hour or so, Cook generally left on length and you could see the new ball bounce taking the ball over the stumps pretty consistently. I thought height was the only issue when it did strike him, was perhaps slightly surprised by how far it would have cleared the stumps by.

I presume the 5 run penalty for a non-worn helmet is to stop fielding teams putting helmets everywhere, isn't it? If it's an automatic dead ball, no penalty, you'd get 400 helmets and put them all around the boundary.

Well having been at the match today, I can honestly say I thought it was a fascinating day's cricket.

OK, England's final position is a good one but there was a period just after lunch shen Strauss and Trott were going strong when a 400+ score for not many was a distinct possibility.

It was the introduction of Mahmahdulla that, for a while at least, brought the game back towards Bangladesh.

Pietersen shone brightly for a while and it was a real "WTF" moment when he got out. A true anti-climax.

Trott was superb though - still can't get my mind around all that scratching about, mind!

Point is that balls quite often look like going for the stumps, but sail over them in the end. I've seen that so many times during practice.

I guess that makes sense.

I love all these little intricities in the laws of cricket.
Yeah, they're usually good for silly debates.

Maybe not the right spot here, but last week we had a discussion during my own match (Dutch crap level) about taking a leg bye when not offering a shot. Two of my team mates tried to do so (#9 & #11 :) ) and were consequently sent back, as the ball was declared dead. It had to be bowled again. I think that's not right.... It was a good delivery!

And what if the a ball sails from the pads onwards to the boundary when the batsman is not attempting to hit the ball at all? no leg byes? Or 4 leg byes?

My understanding is that both cases you refer to ("leg byes" when the batsman doesn't play a shot or try to take evasive action) should be no run and ball not bowled again.

Bell might be quietly hoping that Morgan doesn't get a hundred here - someone will have to make way for Collingwood after all.

It would be insane for Bell to make way on the back of Morgan smacking a piss weak Bangladesh attack around the park.
