Group F (Super 8) - Sri Lanka, Australia, India, West Indies

Debris

International 12th Man
After Sri Lanka's hammering India has quite a decent chance of making it to the semis on run rate. One problem is that they play before the West Indies who will know exactly what they need to do against Australia to move ahead even if they lose the game.
Will Australia try to manipulate the game to get WI through?

Add 90 more Mahela runs to that total and it looks more like it. Pity that when he failed nobody came to the fray.

The Aussies don't exactly tank matches....
I'm sure Australia would want to see Chris Gayle out of the tournament, and would much rather see India in the last four, so I expect the Aussies to do their outmost to beat the Windies.

Australia are not going to drop the catch of Gayle like India. So it doesn't matter to them who goes through.

Aussies cricketers are a proud bunch and I know they haven't forgotten what Gayle did to them at the Oval in the last T20 WC. If they had to name the most dangerous opener in this format it would surely be him.

Bollinger really should have been there as our Gayle specialist (and the fact he's one of our three best seamers).

I agree but the Aussies seem to have developed a West Indian like obsession with pace like fiyah and Dougies deadly accurate 135-145kph stuff is apparently nowhere near as good as Taits 150 kph all over the place fare.

If I was in charge Dougie would be in every Aussie representative side selected.

To be fair, Dougeh had been pretty dire in T20 until the most recent IPL, and most of his exploits came late in that after the squad was picked. I'd still definitely take Tait and Nannes ahead of him - Johnson's probably the debatable one but it's still a very close call and Johnson could theoretically win a game with the bat as well. Would've gone with Bolly ahead of Harris but it's not like it's a clear-cut choice. No matter who was left out there'd be a stack of posts about how it was a bad call but the fact of the matter is, picking five specialist quicks in the squad (especially with the likes of Watto and Christian around) would've been completely unnecessary, particularly on these pitches.

Gawd, not for me. Could you imagine 9-11 of Bolly/Nannes/Tait? *shudders* Imagine OZ being 6/not many as they were against both Bangladesh and SL knowing that's what was to come instead of Smith/Johnson!

That, to me, is why Harris got the nod over Bolly; if Nannes and Tait are both in the side and the batting order falls in a heap, Harris at 9 gives you someone who can hold the stick at least (and can hit quite well, tbh) if you're going for an all-pace attack. Either that or you'd have to pick Bolly over either Nannes or Tait and that was never going to happen. An injury to either of them instead of Lee, however.......

Surely Sri Lanka are only keeping Jayasuriya for sentimental purposes? Yes he has been an an amazing player, but now he is 41. I think it's time to move on...

Will be interesting to see how Australia go today and what is a very slow pitch. I suspect that they will be more vulnerable in the semi finals than in the finals given the pitches that they are playing on.

Agreed

If they make it back to Barbados, I'd expect them to win it but I have doubts that they'll make it that far as this wicket suits their opponents far more than them

Our bowling attack is still good enough to pick up wickets on a slow wicket, we are not just bouncy wicket bullies.
