BCCI asks Cricket Australia for more tests

@spark and Teja,

I am aware of the rich tradition and importance behind the Ashes and I respect it as a contest hugely because it is perhaps the only 5 test series now.
But it makes no sense when someone posts rubbish like 'Let's not play any test cricket but stay at home and prepare for Ashes', it's not as if Aus will be playing a tight schedule till the Ashes. Actually they have only the 2 Pak tests in Eng in about 10 months preceding the Ashes. So that logic from social made no sense whatsoever.

@social,

Not enough justification mate there. India can afford to play it safe and retain it's no.1 rank, without playing anything, till the next FTP scheduled series, which is the series in SA. So it makes no sense from a conservative angle to schedule any series and probably jeopardise our rankings before that. So kudos to BCCI for taking this risk, and setting a welcome precedence for other nations. Test cricket has never got
more attention than now since perhaps the late 80s (before one day cricket took over), thanks to us becoming no.1, so Bcci might just want to utilise that. Nothing wrong in that as it is a win win situation for all.
If they dont play, India CANNOT retain the no. 1 ranking unless others lose or draw (you do understand that teams get awarded ranking points for series victories, dont you?)

As for the prominence of test cricket, maybe it's risen in India but everywhere else it's situation normal

Haha , what do you mean by situation normal ? That no one watches it like in SA , WI or Pakistan

If you look at social's post, he wasn't saying India had to play Tests against Australia to stay top, just that they had to play Tests. Not sure if it's true or not, but it definitely seems like you got the wrong idea with that part of the post.
If they had to play test, they could have invited WI who have not toured IND since 2002.

They just want to check how good your pace attack is.

You can add Oz to that list - unless it's India, SA or Eng, the interest is relatively minimal

Ever cared to check the calendar? Aus plays just 2 tests against Pak and SA plays WI in a 3 test series before India plays SA in SA. Even if they both win, and India plays nothing till SA series they're not going to lose their number 1 ranking.

8-) So he wasn't saying it's better not to play any cricket, tests or otherwise than play a two test series?
Don't add being disingenuous..

You accused him of saying India had to play Australia to retain their ranking. He said no such thing.

Whatever mate, I won't argue semantics with you. Just keep on keepin' on. :)

I can't help it if you misinterpret me and accuse of doing the same with social's post.

I have clarified when I said Aus tests, I gave more emphasis to tests and not Aus, for the nth time, Ind aren't losing their test numero uno status till they clash with SA, if they don't play any tests in the intervening period.

So social's argument that India are scheduling the series out of way just because they might lose no.1 ranking is invalid prima facie.

Good Sir Alex. I'm happy for you.

So long as you're ok with it, I'll rest easy.

The wonderful, smoothly running engine of the new and oh-so-improved CC that you plainly are.

I speak for everyone in saying we're richer for your being here. :)

How could a thread about playing more tests than per FTP in CW come down to such bickering, I will never know...

I thought most CWers loved test cricket. :(

Hi pot, I'm kettle..

We do! We're just warming up for the inevitable when this India-Australia series takes place. You know, 45 pages on a dodgy lbw, stuff like that.

Good for forum atmosphere. :)

I've actually made a vow never to visit an Australia-India thread on CW again, because its put me off those contests in the past. Hopefully when it does go ahead, we get a series played in a decent spirit.

Hardly going to happen when everyone expects it to fail from the start, tbf.

HI kettle.. Pot speaking. :)

But seriously, I thought the last test series in India went pretty ok as far as posting goes. Did I miss something?

The only problem was perhaps that Ponting bowlng spinners incident. Otherwise seemed ok?

Yeah I think that's right actually. Certainly not Ponting's finest hour. Pretty much summed up where the team was at that point really.

I hope this happens though. Seems yonks since I've watched Test cricket.

I wonder if it will be a Border-Gavaskar series, or if they stipulate that for the trophy to go on the line it must be three or more.

If Sir Alex and Social argue, I don't see how that's an "India vs. Australia" thread again. Posters have issues with other posters when its India vs. Australia or Lillee vs. Marshall. So let's not paint everyone with one brush.

That's what I was thinking actually. Quite curious.
