Given Durham's woes today, I wonder whether our north-eastern correspondent wishes the Minor County had a bowling line-up of this sort of quality:

CD Nash 4 wickets @ 6.75
RSC Martin-Jenkins 16 @ 12.12
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan 17 @ 14.05
CD Collymore 13 @ 14.38
JE Anyon 7 @ 22.57
MS Panesar 7 @ 23.42

Will take our score, slightly disappointing in the end having looked good whilst Prince and Croft were at the crease, but given our start its not bad, unfortunate that Crofty couldn't quite get his ton, still a great start to the year for him. Early wickets tomorrow could make things interesting, looks like it will bomb it down on Friday tho

Tbf to McDonald I see he did captain Victoria for at least part of last season - I thought Chris Rogers was their skipper.
Cameron White's captain of Victoria; David Hussey is vice. McDonald's captained Victoria on a couple of occasions when neither of those two are available. He's got a very good cricket brain though so it doesn't really surprise me that he's been given the gig; I think he'll do a good job of it.

Conditions should suit him as well IMO - if you can average 37 with the bat and 29 with the ball in Australian conditions when you're a front foot batsman and a brisk medium outswing bowler, you should go pretty well in England.

Fair enough - as you say it's likely that McDonald will do well in England - personally I don't like to see a county captaincy handed over to a brand new overseas signing though; it does seem like a slap in the face to senior players. Surrey have only ever had one overseas captain, Geoff Howarth - and he'd been with the county about ten years before he got the gig.

Im sure he would be happy and vindicated by your illustration that Panesar is the worst bowler in the county.

The thing is they have a young side and Nixon might not have wanted the job even on a temporary basis. They are making a fresh start this season with Hoggard and maybe they thought another fresh face would be better than using an old one who has been used to all the mediocrity of recent years.

100 for Rana, a terrific knock. He gave Murray G a 46 run start but has beaten him to the century. Sussex now 319-7 and a lead of 205.

Kent 30odd for 3 with Key, Denly & VJ out, Chapple with 2 wickets but now we've brought on Powell so expect a bit of a recovery.

edit: Chapple took his 700th FC wicket for Lancs, WAG

Yorkshi*e only managed to get 3 batting bonus points as they failed to get to 350 within the overs, you would have thought at only 2 wickets down they would have pushed on a bit quicker...not complaining mind, a low point scoring draw would be nice.

Finally Hampshire doing something good this year with Warwickshire 106/7, Kabir doing most of the damage with 4/23.

Lancashire looking well in control, and this partnership could be the big one to break, Jones and Stevens. Powell gone for 17 off his 4 overs so far, could be worse!

Essex have made a solid start in reply to Somerset's 387, Cook and Godleman have made their way to 61 at lunch. Trego was my worry, and he didn't disappoint with a speedy 71 not out.

Hants have finally got their season up and running, on top against Warwickshire whose batting continues to disappoint despite the appearance of Bell and Trott. Good to see Kabir picking up another 4 so far, think that's 15 wickets so far this season at less than 20.

Mark Davies' wicketless overs has now extended to 81, what does he have to do ? A very reasonable economy (less than 2 an over) this season, but not enough to restrict Yorkshire, who are now in a strong position and may want to step on the gas in the afternoon session so they can declare with plenty of time left in the match.

Great partnership between Rana Naved and Goodwin, the relatively small lead they had when they combined forces is now a very imposing one. Leicester's top order will be under serious pressure this afternoon.

Godleman currently 84* so hopefully he can get his ton.

Moeen Ali again looking like the only one who's capable of scoring for Worcestershire.
