Battle of the World Cup stars

BoyBrumby

Englishman
Second Valderrama for the hair, Leonardo for the elbow, Owen for the goal and Cubillas for some diversity
Unfortunately that'd now take us over; wanna pick your two favs?

EDIT: Forget it; I'll just throw three into a few battles. Noms now closed with vic's post.

Battles to follow shortly.

First Round

32 ties to get through, so two per day. Negative votes are allowed for those of you of a malicious disposition. 24 hours (or thereabouts) per battle; ten vote lead mercy kill applies.

Battle One

Johan Cruyff (The Netherlands)
World Cups: 1 (1974)
World Cup Apperances: 7
World Cup Goals: 3
Best Performance: Runner-Up in 1974
Noteable for: The Cruyff turn and being the epitome of that typically Dutch brand of total football that nearly went all the way

v

Geoff Hurst (England)
World Cups: 2 (1966, 1970)
Apps: 6
Goals: 5
Best: Winner in 1966
Noteable for: Being the only man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final & the only contender to have played first-class cricket

v

Michael Owen (England)
World Cups: 3 (1998, 2002, 2006)
Apps: 10
Goals: 4
Best: Quarter-finalist in 2002 & 2006
Noteable for: A magnificent solo goal versus Argentina as a fleet-footed child in 1998 and "earning" two penalties against the same oppo.

Battle two

Paolo Maldini (Italy)
World Cups: 4 (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002)
Apps: 23
Goals: 0
Best: Runner-Up in 1994
Noteable for: Being an indefatigable presence in the Italian defence for several hundred years

V

Alf Ramsey (England)
World Cups: 1 (1950)
Apps: 3
Goals: 0
Best: First Round in 1950
Noteable for: Being part of the England team to lose 1-0 to the USA & being the man who managed England to the title in 1966.

V

Zinedine Zidane (France)
World Cups: 3 (1998, 2002, 2006)
Apps: 12
Goals: 5
Best: Winner in 1998
Noteable for: Returning from suspension to inspire France to a maiden title and that head-butt.

International Coach
Hurst and Maldini for me. Taking Hurst over Cruyff, although the latter the better player, Hurst scored when it really counted (ie, against the Germans)

Really tough in the first one but I think I have to vote Hurst

Zidane in the second obv.

Norwood's on Fire
Hurst, remind me how many winner's medals Cruyff has

Would have voted Owen over him too FTR as he was responsible for like my three favourite WC moments, as alluded to by Brumby

Ramsey in the second.

There's only one guy I'll be voting over any Englishmen (except that jamaican prick), and he's English too tbh

Cruyff & Zidane

Anyone else think that England are ridiculously over-represented in the nominations? Only me? I'll get my coat then

Laughed at this mind:

"being the epitome of that typically Dutch brand of total football that nearly went all the way"

will probably be 7 English QFs + Pele at this rate
Hmmmm. I don't know - 6 Poms, Tim Cahill & Pele I suspect.

Should have made it so you couldn't nominate your countrymen, then we'd have a more representative sample - still plenty of Poms would be in there. Hurst was really a one-game wonder, for example. Deserves to be in the mix, though.

EDIT: [/whinge]
