Not a gamble at all. One of Englands 3 greatest spinners IMO
I agree that hes quality but I think others will see his wickets per match as a detriment and somewhat of a weakness - thats what I meant by a gamble as I assume there would be a vote for the best side. Still, at least it solves the issue of finding a spinner, and with his batting ability at number nine my final selection might as well bat like Chris Martin.

Rhodes batting at 9!

International Debutant
I'll have Sir Alec Bedser, or if Cev wants him before I'm up, I'll take Frank Tyson.

Wanted Greig or rhodes for my allrounder spot ,but now will now have to gamble on the last country.

Will go for some one hwo fits the number 8 an spinner slot perfectly here.

Hedley Verity
,one of enlgand's finest ever spinners, and arguably the best.
Proved himself against Bradman's aussies and troubled Bradman the most.
Bradman said- "I think I know all about Clarrie (Grimmett), but with Hedley I am never sure. You see, there's no breaking point with him."

If a touchstone of Verity's greatness be needed, there is D.G. Bradman, the most inexorable scorer of runs that cricket has yet seen, whose Test match average against England stands at 91.42 in 46 innings. I think it was Verity who kept that average under 150. He was one of only three or four bowlers who came to the battle with Bradman on not unequal terms (haud impar congressus!)

He averaged 24.37 with the ball taking 144 wickets and a decent batting average of 21 too. And to top that he was one of the best fielders of the time.

Playing against Bradman, as with Bedser, that makes that average all the more impressive.
