apparently no offer to cleary eihter
If this is true than that is ridiculous from the SACA. Cleary is pretty much our leading bowler and George needs a decent opening bowler with him. Dissapointed about the Cosgrove decision. Hoping he stays at the redbacks somehow.

It was meant to be a smile.
Can someone post the sa contract list please.
Shame about cleary, you would think he would get a 2nd round offer.
Can't find it. If you do though post it straight away.

So not surprised about Cleary. Injury-prone quick = anathema to SACA. plus, they'd prefer a cru-cutted seam-up merchant who goes for 3 an over and takes barely any wickets to a bloke actually in with a chance of bowling out decent batters. Cleary is a bit 'different'.

As for Cosgrove, colour me shocked. As if 'not living up to one's potential' is a good enough reason to cut a bloke. The place has a long history of Simone Warne-esque devotion to absolute passengers and Cossie's not a bad dude. There's got to be more to it.

April 15, 2010 Mark Cosgrove has offered his services to Queensland after being cut by South Australia, with Redbacks officials conceding defeat in their efforts to get him to lose weight.

The gifted but blatantly overweight Cosgrove, whose poor physical condition has meant he has never fulfilled his potential, has been let go by the Redbacks after a highly-publicised battle to conform to conventional fitness standards.

Cosgrove's management have contacted the Bulls, who have decided Cosgrove is welcome to take his chance if he heads north.

But he won't be offered a Bulls contract or guaranteed a spot in any of the three forms of the game.

Cosgrove is playing English county cricket with Glamorgan and has a history of returning from England, the world's fish and chip capital, in poor shape.

"We have decided to go down the path of having faith in our young players like Chris Lynn, Ben Dunk and Jason Floros," Bulls coach Trevor Barsby said.

"What message would it send to those players if Mark Cosgrove came back from England and walked straight into the side without doing a pre-season with us?

"How would the blokes who have trained all through the off-season feel?

"Mark is a very talented player and he is welcome to come to Queensland but if he does he will start with our QAS (Second XI) and work his way up from there. Luke Feldman proved last season that it can be done. It would be fantastic if he takes that path and it would prove to us he really wants to be here. But there will be no walk-up starts."

Cosgrove is 25, averages 42 in first-class cricket and scored two first-class centuries last season.

But after playing three one-day matches for Australia in 2006 he has failed to improve his fitness to acceptable levels.

When Cosgrove played those matches for Australia the team hierarchy noticed he was well below passable standards as a fieldsman and needed urgent attention to his game.

The Bulls were closely monitoring Cosgrove's form a year ago with a view to a possible approach but the emergence of a promising band of young batsmen has prompted them to stick with local talent.

It would not have helped Cosgrove's chances of a Bulls contract that several technical flaws were evident in a twin failure in a Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba recently.

I'm not happy at all at the moment. Cleary hasn't been confirmed either but hopefully he did get a contract and if he didn't than that is absolutely pathetic form from the SACA. I think most of us are tired of this kind of rubbish from them. Cleary is a pretty good consistent pace bowler which is something SA don't really have and not having him in the team would be the stupidest act I've ever seen. Top Cat what did you mean by cleary is ' different ' :p. Keep us updated Brockley.

Really dissapointed about Cosgrove he should be staying. I mean all the crap aside he has been a decent player for the redbacks without being the great one he should be. His last innings for the redbacks will probably his ton agaisnt NSW...

Looks like he will be going to QLD ( don't even know if thats a good move tbh ). Hopefully somehow he stays with the redbacks.

Don't know about the signing of Blizzard either..

Bushranger anger over Pattinson offer CHLOE SALTAU
April 16, 2010

IT IS not unusual for Victorian cricket officials to be mad with the national selectors, and this time the angst runs deep.

It centres on an approach from South Australia to Bushrangers fast bowler Darren Pattinson, and a perception that selector Jamie Cox, who is also director of cricket for the South Australian Cricket Association, has a conflict of interest.

The perception is not new; Fairfax columnist Peter Roebuck wrote in December that the former Tasmanian captain must relinquish one role or the other because they were bound to clash.

The Pattinson case appears to have brought the issue to a head. Victoria claims privately that the national selectors' decision to award Redbacks paceman Shaun Tait a Cricket Australia contract - the fast and wild quick is the only Twenty20 specialist on the list - frees up cash for SA to chase a paceman from another state.

The Bushrangers say they are restricted by the salary cap in what they can offer Pattinson, whose value to their attack transcends his notoriety as a one-off Test player for England.

Victorian coach Greg Shipperd was otherwise occupied as coach of Delhi in the Indian Premier League when The Age called last night, but he is clearly upset about the situation. ''I am happy to speak on that issue when I get back to Australia but certainly it is something that Victoria and all the other states should attend to, in my opinion, as a matter of urgency,'' Shipperd said.

''All I will say is that the states are in the balance with decisions, and I don't think it assists the game in Australia that these conflicts of interest, perceived or otherwise, exist. The game is professional enough to provide full-time national selectors.''

At this stage, the coach is not prepared to elaborate, except to state that ''it would be very disappointing for us to lose Darren Pattinson''.

Pattinson, 30, is playing county cricket in England but his manager, Gerard Sholly, said his client was ''very happy'' with Victoria and will meet Bushrangers officials next week.

Still, the matter highlights issues other than the push for a full-time selector, which was placed on hold when the CA board re-appointed chairman Andrew Hilditch for two years. Fellow selector David Boon holds a similar role to Cox in Tasmania.

As The Age reported this month, CA has pledged to review its outdated system for awarding contracts to reflect the growth of Twenty20. In the meantime, players are given a limited-overs ranking and the selectors use their discretion to weigh the importance of Twenty20 within that category.

Tait, who has bowled 20 overs in five Twenty20 games for Australia in the past year, received a base contract of about $210,000, but opening batsman David Warner, who played eight Twenty20 games in the same period, missed out. So did David Hussey.

Victorians are often too quick to float conspiracy theories about national selection, and Cox, who chose not to comment last night, should be taken at his word upon accepting the SACA job that it would complement his selection duties rather than present a conflict. ''And if it were to arise, then I'd just purely step back,'' he said at the time. Still, the perception will not go away.

Yet he was one of SA's top bats last year, especially in T20's (goodbye Champions Trophy).

I've advocated a kick up the arse for him but letting him go just seems like "No, we're breaking up with YOU." from SACA.

It's a hard one for SACA, though. Klinger was seemingly cut from Vic for the same reasons (fitness aside). Sometimes it's unavoidable that a bloke won't do well until he moves somewhere else.

Loving Barsby's attitude. Probably why QLD are doing so well despite having a list of no names before the start of last season.

For mine, George aside, he's just the most likely to take the wicket of top-class batters. They cut Harris because of his injury history and, of course, were proven right when he just faded into obscurity.

Oh wait.

FFS.

And a triple hit on the blue collar boys from Northern Districts looms. First Harris was cut loose, Cosgrove is out and keeper Graham Manou is set to be replaced by brilliant but injured middle order batsman Callum Ferguson as SA skipper.
Hmmmmm.......... either Manou's knee injury is really bad or they're being paranoid about anyone with an injury again. Why's Harris not in the picture?

Interesting. Would be shocked if Pattinson left Vic even for more money, tbh. He's one of the few quicks with the game to do well on Adelaide Oval so I'd suggest SACA will chase him hard since there's a ban on picking locals.

I don't think it would necessarily be about money. There could be a bit of a squeeze, with DHussey and Hodge coming back onto the Victorian books; there might be a couple of blokes lose a contract?

I can see where the Vics are coming from in regards to Cox, I thought the same thing when I first learnt Cox's role in SA the other day.

Yeah and he'd be one of the vulnerable ones I guess. Still young enough to get a decent contract somewhere else too you might be right on the money.

I can confirm Cleary has missed out on a first round contract which is just plain stupid. He better can a 2nd round one..

Pattinson would be a decent option but I'd rather someone like ****ley. Doubt the SACA would be smart enough for that though.

No sympathy for Cosgrove here. He's had plenty of time to get himself into shape, and as a professional athlete there's no excuse to be as out of shape as he is. How hard is it to exercise some self control?

My cousin is best mates with James Pattinson. Is he moving states?

Also is there any news on any Sydney Grade players getting contracts anywhere, Brockley?

Aaron Bird retires from State cricket
Friday, 16 April 2010

RTA SpeedBlitz Blues quick Aaron Bird has retired from cricket
Sports Shoot / Delly Carr

RTA SpeedBlitz Blues fast bowler Aaron Bird has retired from State cricket.

Hailing from Taree on the NSW north coast, Bird made his First Class debut for NSW in 2005 and played six First-class matches for the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues, taking 14 wickets, including a career-best 4-80 on debut against Victoria in 2005.

However, it was in the limited over formats of the game that he excelled, representing NSW in 25 domestic one-day matches, taking 34 wickets at an average of 30.91, including a best of 5-26. He was also a major contributor in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash where in 12 matches he took 21 wickets at 17.42, including a best of 3-21.

Aaron was particularly effective in the 2008/09 season and was instrumental in helping NSW win the KFC Big Bash, finishing with 13 wickets at an average of 14.07, that included a spell of 4-0-21-3 in the victory over Victoria in the Final at ANZ Stadium. He was also a member of the NSW squad that won the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 in India in October 2009.

Aaron has no regrets about his decision: "I have had a wonderful time representing NSW and loved every minute of it. I leave with a great sense of pride and achievement that I have represented this great State, and am truly thankful for the opportunity and support through some tough times that Cricket NSW has given me. I will never forget some of the great memories and achievements in my playing career and although it is a sad time in any players career, the memories and friends will always be with me. I am now excited about the next stage of my life and move on with no regrets"

Cricket NSW Chief Executive David Gilbert paid tribute to Bird:

"Aaron's professionalism to the game, whether training or playing, set an outstanding example to his teammates. The manner with which he dealt with adversity during his playing career was truly inspirational. I wish him the very best in his future endeavours and thank him for his commitment and dedication to the NSW team’.

Aaron will now move into a career in Real Estate. He will continue to play Grade cricket with Canterbury-Bankstown

All well and good if he's failing but he was right near the top in all forms of the game for SA. They've carried blokes doing far worse for longer. Why pick him for all 3 forms then decide to cut him? It's at best inconsistent. Put it this way, SA can't afford to lose him even with all his foibles and there's no-one any better around to fill the breach.

Christ, if 'not living up to one's potential' was enough to get you cut, Borgas should have played his last state game years ago. They first picked him at 17 almost 10 years ago and he's barely averaged 30 for that time. The ROI must surely be looking a bit shaky......

Bird retiring from first class cricket is one of the more amusing news stories I have heard this off-season. Since when do cricketers who play 6 first class games (and poorly), announce a retirement? Surely a quick phone call to Dave Gilbert would do?

Dydl

International Debutant
Bird's only 26 too, not exactly a normal retirement this.

He's been in the news through his career though, but not for the right reasons. Suspect bowling action resulted in ban from CA for three months, hit and injured Michael Slater as a teenager, and got in trouble from KFC for the nickname on the back of his shirt.

Interesting that he'd make an announcement though; he's hardly the most high-profile player...
