You are conveniently forgetting the 320 wickets that he took with it. As an all rounder his record is unmatched.

His bowling is not allround quality though. His moreso inbetween a part-timer and a bowler, without being one or the other.

Front line bowlers have far worse figures than him. In his hayday was a specialist death bowler, who could bowl darts at will. Far better than lot of spinners who are playing ODIs at the moment.

Having said that neither Viv Richards or Steve Waughs bowling was all round quality. But they were mighty useful fifth bowlers.

His not better then Hauritz, Swann, Muralitharan, Mendis, Harbhajan, Afridi, Ajmal, Botha, Vettori, etc, etc and he averages almost 37 with the ball.

He's definitly better than Hauritz. Swann, Murali, Mendis, Afridi, Ajmal, Botha, Vettori are not death bowlers by any means, so the comparison is not that straight forward. Jayasuriya's figures suffered because he bowled at death and settled for 6 rpo. His speciality of death bowlig makes him much valuable than an ordinary spinner like Hauritz. Whn SL had Murali, Dharmasena, Chandana and De Silva who could flight, dip and rip it in middle overs, Jayasuriya was a nice addition to come in the last overs and restrict scoring.

sanath's 32 avg comes with a 90 SR attached to it. It means he plays a different role as an opener compared to traditional openers. there is no doubt in my mind that he is an all-time great in the ODI game. forget the 350 games, 10000 runs and 300+ wickets. just a few of his hundreds and some of his half centuries all scored at the speed of light stunning the opposition out of the game would be enough to grant him a place in the legends' table

His bowling isn't good when he opens.
