Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Flintoff

Apologies if I've just missed the answer to this question but why have we gone from 4 way battles to 3?

Because we had 158 players nominated. Needs a better mathematician than me to figure a way this could be done with even numbers in each battle and without 79-way battles.

Sydney Barnes for his incredible test match bowling record, and because I'd like to throw away my vote with both Flintoff and AB getting plenty.

Freddie.

I'm finding it difficult voting for the old-timers in these contests. Sure, Barnes is a legend but given that I never saw him play and he died before I was born, I find it hard to vote for him when asked who's my favourite cricketer out of him and Freddie (and AB Other) given that Freddie is a contemporary hero. Trumper and Hassett suffered from this in previous rounds.

Yeah, it can be hard. We tend to have a greater affinity to the blokes we've either grown up with or seen in action - when it comes to the old-timers I suppose I have certain particular heroes that I grew up reading about and being inspired by in some way. I guess it works both ways - the old-timers suffer on the one hand because I never saw them in action, but benefit on another insofar as I probably over-romanticise them as both players and human beings.

I'm hoping I can count on your vote when it comes to MW Tate, who definitely falls into that category for me? I'm terrified that he's going to get a pummelling in the voting against some 23-year-old T20 specialist.

Old Maurice seems, like Bedser, to have been both a wonderful bowler and a wonderful bloke - I reckon you can be 80-90% assured of my vote for him. My caveat is that there are probably still half a dozen or so particular all time favourites of mine yet to emerge, and who I would be honour bound to vote for ahead of Tate should the unfortunate happen and they get drawn against him.

Barnes, on the grounds that I'd like him to at least get a wildcard, and Flintoff is winning easily.
