Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

That's tough: I nominated two of them, and have immense time for both of the others...

Trueman I think. 300 wickets in those days translates into how many wickets now, with the increased number of tests played? Think he would have given yer Ambroses and McGraths a run for their money. And beats them hands-down as a character.

But that means voting against Benaud, which kinda hurts. Life's tough.
Can I suggest that in future rounds people shouldn't be forced to vote against their own nominees?

Richie, love him, and the other three, just quietly, were/are a bit twattish, by all accounts.

3 nominees, and we're going to have 1 winner. At some point they'll have to anyway :p

I see the point, but I didn't bother to track who nominated whom, and as such would have to do the legwork. Which this battle requires too much of already

Fiery Fred

My favourite Trueman quote is the one that arose out of some brave soul commenting on the size of his arse

".. teks a bloody big 'ammer t' knock in a bloody big nail tha knows ........"

FST wasn't cool, was he? Great bowler but I would hesitate to call him cool. Bitter, curmudgeonly egomaniac, yes; cool no.
The two aren't mutually exclusive obvz- see Jose Mourinho for more details- it's FST the cricketer rather than FST the person who was phenomenally cool.

Great work coming up with Mourinho's name - a great example of a cool yet bitter curmudgeonly egomaniac.

Anyway yes I suppose that if I'd been a kid growing up with FST as my team's spearhead, I'd think him pretty cool. Although he'd obviously have some stiff competition for my hero-worship. England had some proper players in those days.

Let me count the ways:

1. Not being Ajmal Khan or Darren Pattinson or Darren Maddy etc etc

2. Being May or Compton or Tyson or Statham or Lock or Laker or Loader or Wardle etc etc

Harsh on both Trueman and Benaud as I'd tend to vote for both against different opposition, but from my reading and acquiring of knowledge of WG I have to give him my vote.
