Tendulkar's decision not to play in T20 WC good for other teams: Afridi

Karachi: The greatest batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s decision for not playing in the upcoming ICC Twenty20 World Cup is good for other teams, feels Pakistan's T20 captain Shahid Afridi.

Afridi says the champion batsman's absence from the next month's event is a blessing in disguise for other teams.

Tendulkar decided to quit the quick format along with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid in 2007.

The great batsman, who is playing in red hot form in the third season of Indian Premier League (IPL) has forced former as well as present cricketers, including Afridi to ask the right-hander to change his decision and play in the T20 World Cup starting April 30 in the West Indies.

"The way he has blossomed in the last few years, he is only getting better and better as a batsman. If he is not playing for India in the Twenty20 World Cup, it is certainly a big advantage for other teams," Afridi said.

Fans wish if Sachin could change his decision…

Delhi 6th and Chennai 7th, fair to say not many saw that coming. It's quite bizarre actually. Still, it's all a subtext to the massive MI choke coming up in about a month

Will Paul Collingwood make the XI today? He's just into the IPL, though he can add a little strength to that bowling attack. The question is on whom to drop- AB has just got a decent knock at a good strike rate, Dilshan's already dropped and Warner seems to be in good nick, and dropping McDonald and Nannes doesn't make much sense. It will be a bold decision, once it happens.

IPL 2nd highest-paid league, edges out EPL, Specials, Cricket, Sports, Times of India

NEW DELHI: If you think that cricketers' wages in the Indian Premier League don't measure up to what English Premier League footballers make, think again.

According to the inaugural Annual Review of Global Sports Salaries to be published later this week by sportingintelligence.com, the second highest-paid league, based on first-team salaries on a pro-rata basis, is our very own IPL.

Second only to the American National Basketball Association (NBA) league, whose annual average salary is 2.62 million pounds, the IPL's average salary, calculated over a year, is 2.5 million pounds. It must be remembered that the league is only played over a six-week period, making what cricketers earn for playing Twenty20 matches astounding.

The third highest-paid is American Major League Baseball (MLB), at 1.82 million pounds while EPL comes in fourth, at 1.46 million pounds.

In the 211-team list currently monitored by average first-team pay, Royal Challengers Bangalore comes in at 12th, at an average of 57,833 pounds a week, standing two places above Manchester United.

According to a review of global sports salaries, and the IPL boasts of three teams within the top-30 bracket.

The IPL has edged the English Premier League, who has two teams in the list - Manchester United and Chelsea. RCB is No. 12 (£57,833 per week), and others on the list are Kolkata Knight Riders (£56,445) and Chennai Super Kings (£55,526). At No. 1 is the MLB's New York Yankees (£89,897).

All data is taken from seasons played or ending in 2009 except for European football clubs.

That's an insane amount of money for the time spent playing. Especially considering people like Hayden and Gilchrist can basically rock up and perform with no other sporting commitments in the year. To think that baseballers have to grind through so many regular-season games and spring training to earn a little bit more (for big teams) and a whole bunch less (for the smaller ones) is interesting to consider.

The NBA/NHL also have the highest minimum wages of any leagues in the world (500k+ p/a), which explains why so many of them are up there on the list, they have no choice but to shower their players with money.
